Is it an electric or mechanical gauge? If it's electric then a gauge will peg all the way if the signal wire is grounding out on something.

Sorry I wasn't so clear. Electric gauges basically work with resistance. The way you test the gauge to see if it is working properly is you ground the neg side of the wire to a good ground and the gauge will peg. I'm guessing that your neg wire is grounding somewhere it shouldn't. I'm no electrical expert so I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I think I'm right.

Re: HELP tranny temp gauge installation problem

i have the IGN wire connected into the fuse port..12V wire connected with a fuse for light on the guage.. the two grounds tied 2gether and grounded on GOOD ground..and the sender wire connected to sender in tranny...upon startup or key on engine off the glow light comes on as it should and the needle pegs over right and stays? could it be a bad connection between sender wire and sender? the grounds are tied together and grounded on a solid ground bolt in the engine...AHHHH

The way I understand it your setup looks like this:

But with the two ground wires touching. Try separating the two. Ground the wire for the light under the dash somewhere and ground the wire for the gauge under the hood somewhere. Maybe that's your problem?
