Re: Help:Changing Rod Bolts

I don't know how much those rods distort when changing to an ARP bolt, I usually throw them away and use Manley's on LSx builds.

Is the motor in the car? Do you have the rods on the bench?

Re: Help:Changing Rod Bolts

My worry would be distorting the big end bore...but they are a cracked cap design and so re-sizing is not possible.

Remove one cap and install new bearings, snug each bolt up tight, then torque to the specs supplied by ARP with the moly lube. Maybe lay some plastiguage in there to verify that the new bearings give you ok clearances. It's as simple as that.

Why do you say resizing is not possible??

Re: Help:Changing Rod Bolts

In the traditional sense, resizing which involves cutting the cap and then re-honing the rod big end to spec is not possible with a cracked cap...there is no flat mating surface to machine. The only way to do it would be to hone the big end oversize and use bearings that are made for exactly that purpose. Like I said, I always use manley rods, so I don't even know if oversize bearings are availible.

I asked that question at Clevite and they didn't have oversize OD bearings as of 6 months ago.

Re: Help:Changing Rod Bolts

I'm pretty sure I saw that they are availible for the 4.6/5.4L fords, but same deal with those, I always use manley's as the reason for the motors being built in the first place is a ventilated block due to PM rods turning to shrapnel with the addition of boost or nos.
