98 SS Question

I have a friend that has a 98 SS and when he got it, he took it to the track to see what it would do. The car was bone stock down to the air filter and its an automatic with normal street radials. He said he ran a 12.9x but he did not keep the time slip. I have not heard of that many bone stock SS's being able to pull off a 12 second pass, much less when the driver was 17 or 18 at the time he ran it. Any information would be helpful to clear this up since im not that familiar with LSx times.

Re: 98 SS Question

You do know there is a reason he did not save the timeslip, right?

However, when all the conditions are good (weather, track, car, driver etc.), bone stock LS1 could break the 13-second barrier. But not by much. It has (supposedly) been done a few times.

So..., the story your friend is telling you could very well be true, but he would definetely be one of the very few ones. I wonder why he did not save the time slip...

Re: 98 SS Question

Well, I guess you could say the sun has been known to shine on a dogs *** some days. But, that sounds to me like the back-woods fishing story about the 30lb bass that got away (no timeslip). Go with him to the track again and see what he runs. If he can't turn at least a 13.1, I'd call b.s. If he can, I'd start to wonder if the car is really bone stock. A mild converter and gears to someone who's never owned an f-body before will feel stock.

Re: 98 SS Question

I've seen stock '98s run low 13's. Can't say I can see one hitting 12's though. But, that low 13 second pass I did see was after the owner disconnected the sway bar, removed the paper filter, removed the serpentine belt, and removed every last piece of something that weighed anything from the car. That, to me, is pushing your luck and shouldn't really count. But, he got the slip.

I think he said he trapped something around a 109 i think? He has been known to b.s but i wanted some input from some people who knew more about it than me.

Re: 98 SS Question

Tell him to prove it. Is he really basing this off a G-tech? They're +/- .10 sec and +5 mph compared to track times.

Re: 98 SS Question

No, he took it to the track, he didnt use a G-tech. I have been tryin to get him to go to the track with me because I want to go but he said he wasnt going to pay money to race when he can race on the street for free. But whatever, yall have pretty much reassured what I was thinking anyway..

Re: 98 SS Question

If he doesn't want to pay $$ to race at the track since street racing is free what made him go on this supposed 12 second run?

Re: 98 SS Question

may be possible to run 12's but not 109mph trap in a stock A4 SS. I have a 98 A4 SS that runs 13.4 @ 104 consistently with a magnaflow catback and slp lid on a 2.0 60' so with something like a 1.8 60' it could go 12's but i doubt your friend can pull that on street tires

Re: 98 SS Question

and let him race on the street for free.... the police LOVE that! ....pay 10 bucks at our midnight drags with safety, or pay hundreds when you get caught and maybe a night in jail.... lol
