Headers and exhaust?

I am somewhat lost on the subject of headers and exhaust. I was told that if i go w/ shorties i can still be able to pass emissions w/ catalytic converters, but wont gain much out of the car. I can go w/ longtubes but wont have cats on them. What is the best set up that i can get for my situation? I live in Illinois and they are b****es about the emissions testing. I want it to sound great.....would a cutout work? Any opinions/suggestions would be great.

I have a 2000 Camaro SS by the way, so anyone w/ similar cars please speak up.

Re: Headers and exhaust?

yeah if you go shorties dont expect to pick up much... if you have LTs you can have the cats... but you still wont pass the visiual check... might be benificial if they are really strict to just gut your cats and get the codes deleted... pick up like 5rwhp on that, and then like another 5-10ish on a catback...

cutouts are the best way to make you car louder and to reduce the restriction of your muffler.... i got one and it is amazing!

Re: Headers and exhaust?

If it's a sniffer test for emissions, gutting the cat is out. It'll pick that up as higher emissions.

I've come to the personal conclusion that my car is fast enough as it is, so no sense in bypassing or altering crap that'll possibly fail an emissions test. Everything else is fair game though.

Re: Headers and exhaust?

Tell us what emissions testing they do there. That would help.
Some places are OK with the cats being moved, just so you have them.

Re: Headers and exhaust?

Good luck deciphering them if you do find them. I know Cali's site is next to useless in trying to figure out what you can get away with. Just so you know, technically, it's illegal to move the cats from their original factory location, no matter where you're at. A lot of places just care that you have them though.

There's gotta be someone else from IL that can help out with this one.

i live in ILL to for 96 a newer cars they just check the readiness test if all those are completed you pass...i went through with no cats what so ever and closed my cut out had a farly quiet muffler they really wont take the mirror to it unless your car is insainly loud...so go for the LT's get the most out of your car if you want put high flow cats on or just buy O2 sims or get them deleted out of your computer

Re: Headers and exhaust?

In my state of RI ,they just scan the obdII cars at the diagnostic port and if it does'nt pick up any codes it will pass.
I would go for the LT's and ORY if I were you. I did. When you go to get it inspected bring it to a small garage were they will probally be less likely to put it on a lift and look under the car and reject you for the visual with no cats.
