Is it really worth going through that trouble to replace that o-ring? Are there any negative long term affects?

You don't have to remove the oil pan. But, you do have to drop the front of it to get to the oil pick-up tube bolt. That also means pulling the crank pulley, water pump, etc. It's a real PITA, but can be done over a weekend with time to spare. However, I doubt that little piece of rubber is causing all of your troubles.

I'm not really having trouble.......have had a little valvetrain tick since I bought the car @ 54k. The dealership told me it was normal so I never bothered having it diagnosed. BTW, it hasn't gotten any worse. Would it be a good idea to have it diagnosed by a professional first?.....BEFORE I tear into the engine like that?

NO! NOT easy to replace. You have to remove the: water pump, crank pulley, timing chain cover and the oil pump slips over the front of the crank shaft.

You don't have to remove the oil pan. But it would make life easier to drop it down a little to get more clearance. It seemed to be easier when the radiator was out of the way. I had more room to get my head in there to see the damn bolt. I did the oil pump on my buddy's car w/ out removing the pan, but it's a Major PITFA! I had to grind down the boxed end of a 10mm wrench to get it to fit in there. Shove some regs in the pan opening to keep the bolt from falling (if it gets loose, it won't go far.)

To get the bolt back in, needle nose and rags again. You'll see..

Also see... It really made a difference in oil pressure consistency.

If you install a ported pump, I HIGHLY recommend getting the thicker O ring. THe smaller O ring causes oil system aeration. Air in the oil means insufficient pressure to the lifters, and possibly the crankshaft. I'll have to check the oil system routing diagram again.

Ask the dealer about the TSB. Write down the # and give it to them. See if they have an LSx Tech, someone who knows a LOT about these engines. There was on here in Alamogordo, but he retired.
