Question fuel tank

Ok, i posted before asking what is the volume of our tanks.....and was told 16.8 gallons. Well I tested that today, sucked the tank till it wouldn't run, and then filled it up. I only was able to put 15.2 gallons in, and that was topping it off 4 times. What happened to the extra 1.6 gallons???

98 is 15.5 99 they changed to 16.8. I am 92% sure I have the gallon sizes right.

Something close to that. On a side note, 98 tanks are steel and 99-up are plastic.

Ok, that makes more sense, but sucks that there is .3 gallons you can't use! Of course it wouldn't get you very far, but every little bit helps. That also explains why I get the worst miles per tank of my friends who have 4th gen f-bodies (theirs are 99 and up)

Thank you.

Running your tank dry will let the pump overheat.

maybe thats why the SES light came on. I had to reset the ECM, but everything works fine now.

I was waiting for someone to chine in.
The gas acts as a lubricant/coolant.
It should would suck to have to have the
tank dropped and a new pump put in to
verify something in your owners manual.

Don't forget about the gas in the fuel lines and fuel rails..........you'd probably be surprised by the volume that can be held in a few feet of hose.

BTW, I agree with not running the tank dry all the time. These new pumps are too damn expensive to be replacing all the time, and it seems to be becoming a common problem (although maybe you just hear about it more because it costs so much and people b!tch about it more?! ).

This is the first, and last time I'll run it dry (assuming I don't run out on the freeway or something).

Don't you find that it won't take gas
sometimes when you wait. I think its
too many vapors causing pressure.
I've had this happen several times on
several fbods. I fill at 1/2 empty, plus
16 gallons of premium aint cheap.

For some reason when I pump gas in my car it doens't click off until some gas spills out of the nozzle. I try setting the little trigger thing and letting it shut off on it's own and it still does it. Is there something wrong with my gas tank or does that happen to anyone else?
