Flowmaster or Borla Exhaust for an '02 Z28?
Re: Flowmaster or Borla Exhaust for an '02 Z28?
I was also wondering if the SS muffler is about as quiet as a std LS1 Z28? I notice SLP has these mufflers for sale at decent price.
Thanks again

Now Im confused, one person says go with Borla and one says go with GMMG. I need to hear more from different people, to make up my mind. The GMMG is pretty expensive too, I think its something like $700.
I WILL PART OUT WITH MY STOCK MUFFLER/EXHAUST IF YOU WANT IT, AFTER I BUY AN AFTERMARKET EXHAUST.

I do want something that is real loud, so everyone can tell I have a damn V8 in my car. The stock mufflers sound like I have a V6. Is that Dynomax any good? does it increase horsepower aswell?

All I can tell you is set-ups like the wide-open Borla, GMMG, and SLP Loudmouth are all louder than most others. It's just the "tone" that separates them from one another. Personally, I like the fact that Borla is stainless steel and has unique looking tips, but it just sounds "funny" to me and a lot of people agree. I don't care what anyone else says (because what sounds the "best" is always subjective), but Borla is NOT a deep sounding system and sounds nothing like a muscle car IMO. And it gets hella raspy/high-pitched once headers are added and especially if the cats are removed. Loudmouth is what it is: nothing but a bunch of piping (straight pipes with NO muffler). The resonator in it is nothing more than a hollow tube. So it is very unrefined to begin with and much like the Borla, gets very raspy/poppy/higher-pitched with headers and or headers/no cats.
GMMG is a deeper/cleaner, much healthier sounding system that sounds like a real muscle car should. And once I added LT headers and highflow cats to it, the tone actually got better instead of worse (I honestly still can't believe how much deeper, louder, & tougher it sounds now). BTW, I've had all three of these systems on both my LS1's if that helps any and you can obviously tell what I like on this motor...

Only problem to me with a Hooker, Dynomax, or ATR muffler is that they are just way too quiet IMO. Hooker does have a nice tone, but I can barely hear it at idle or cruising around town on my LT1 (and it sounds a lot weaker on the LS1 to begin with, so keep that in mind).
OK, I've said enough! So just buy what you like and can afford financially...
OK I think that settled it. Because what I want is my Z28 to sound like a muscle car. I think you have straightened everything out for me. Thanks. Did you install the GMMG system yourself? Is it a simple project?

i just reccommend an air tool to help screw down on the clamps
it'll make the project go that much quicker
Re: Flowmaster or Borla Exhaust for an '02 Z28?
GMMG is a great choice like i already said. From what ur saying, ur picking the right system, the system ur gonna like better. If u don't go with the GMMG then ur other choice would be a xpiped duals. The Xpipe does give u more power under the curve which is where ur gonna be at most of the time, a cutout will make ur car louder but not as defined/clear and it will give u more power on the top end. I doubt they'll be very noticeable gains between GMMG and duals. One reason i would stay with GMMG is because i like the way it looks from the back, u can see the shiny piping and when u have lights shining on it in the dark it looks even nicer...but with duals dumped before the axle u don't really see it and it might scrape the floor i think. Ur gonna love the GMMG and realize that even though the Borla might cost a little less, their price doesn't include shipping charges. Goodluck and keep us updated
Re: Flowmaster or Borla Exhaust for an '02 Z28?
I personally think GMMG sounds like every other system out there(magnaflow, B&B, flowmaster, etc), but this is a subject that's based on opinion alone. Borla IS different sounding, and I like it. Go to http://www.ls1sounds.com and decide for yourself, there's a ton of good options out there, borla, flowmaster and GMMG aren't the only ones. Furthermore, all exhaust is raspy without cats. Doesn't matter if you spend $50,000 on exhaust alone. Catalytic converters are a must to avoid rasp regardless of which exhaust system you choose.

so i would say either borla or gmmg would flow for whatever he's gonna need

I don't think anyone's price includes shipping, so that's not much of a selling point for GMMG, unless it's a sale "free shipping," something like that. Also, make sure you don't base your decision on how your muffler looks at night with lights shining on it... lol one of the goofiest things I've ever heard.

and i brought up that comparison to just say it's going to flow just as well as borla pretty much
not anything that you would notice losing anyways
o, and i might have to agree with the guy that said the gmmg sounds like flowmaster somewhat and up to a point
from idle-3000 it sounds somewhat close but from 3000-up it's no competition
the gmmg stays clear and deep and the flowmaster just chokes up the sound

And when i said the thing about the lights shining on it, i was only saying i liked how it looked, i'm not sure how other systems really look, i'm sure the Borla or Corsa would also look nice, but thats not what i was comparing it to. I was comparing how it looks (any system) versus having duals dumped at the axle where u don't see anything really. I was giving him one reason to go against duals and stay with catback. It was a somewhat stupid reason but i gave him other reasons also that were more valid.

GMMG....ya waste your $.
For the price of the GMMG I got headers, catted Y and a mufflex cat back and had them installed. Shop around. You can even get true duals for less than the GMMG.
If you want loud w/out rasp, check out the TSP Rumbler.
