Fill in the gap... SLP Longtubes ____ SLP y pipe
my friends got a 99' firehawk a4... he has an slp round y-pipe, loudmouth and stock cats
anyways... hes getting slp longtube headers and was gonna get hi-flow cats ($350)
we don't have emissions here in oklahoma, so i talked him out of it.. and i told him about the offroad pipes, and o2 simulators.
but then i got to thinkin... most people, from what i've seen, just go with a custom y-pipe that hooks right to the longtubes (i think?)
now he has the slp y-pipe already, but his readings tell him that he still needs something to fit between the y-pipe and the headers.
we need to know what this is (regular ORP's?) or what? and where we can find em!
thanks!
Jared

SLP headers are overpriced and have fitment and clearance issues. There are better ones out there.
Just get the headers on and take it to a muffler shop and have them fit a pipe in between the Y and the headers. For more power, just get duals.
Where in OK are ya? There are a couple of good f-bod clubs, 1 in OKC the other in Tulsa.

loudmouth will sound like *** without cats...
SLP headers aren't much more of a pain in the *** to install than any other header out there. Just need a little more thinking.

I had SLP's a while back went with QTP's
The ORP is just a 2 foot section of 3 inch pipe. I dont know the exact length though. Just get some 3" pipe & cut it to the needed length. Both ends are slip joint the headers & the Y pipe. I got some wide exhaust band clamps from napa to seal the collectors, work pretty good. There like a flat tin sheet metal clamp, for diesel truck exhaust. You can get them from napa.

I'm Jared's idiot friend who has the 99 Trans Am. I have Stock headers, then a SLP Y-pipe then it goes to a QTP Cutout. (the cutout is where the "glass pack" used to be) and from there it flows out. From what I understand SLP's Long Tubes are over priced and have issues? And if I get them and take off the cats and put 3" pipe it will sound bad? If all that is true what kind of header should I get. There are some that are painted, ceramic coated and a few others. Which is going to last? I don't want to be worring about when are these going to break or have to be tightend. Just want to put them on and forget. So if not SLP, then who and what model?
- Hooker has a "Flange Thickness" of 5/16 while SLP has 1/4? Which is better? Which will last the longest? Painted, Polished, or Ceramic coated? Which is better for what it is made out of? Steel, Stainless steel, or 409 stainless steel? Header style Mid length or full length? Lastly the Primary Tube Gauge 18-gauge or 16-gauge? I got these off of Summit Racing and was looking at these three model's: HOK-2253HKR HOK-2253-2HKR SLE-30051 --- Someone mentioned QTP's headers are they better than hooker? Im sorry for all the questions, I just want to make sure my baby gets the right parts
THANK U SO MUCH - CURT

OK ... first things, first. Your exisiting y-pipe will be useless when you go to headers. It's designed to fit with stock manifolds/cats.
You will have to get a y-pipe or have one made to fit what ever header you get.
As far as what brand ... it really doesn't matter. You can find someone that will tell that they had a problem with XYZ header. There are lot of less expensive headers available, but you also need to take into account what they come with ... ie do they include y-pipe and cats. The other things to take into account is guage, some of the less expensive headers are also lighter gauge - not neccesarily a bad thing.
Get ceramic coated and you can't go wrong.
Last but no least, since all headers are essentially the same, if you really want to pay attention to your cost, just find someone selling a set of used headers ... you can generally find a complete set, headers, y-pipe and sometimes cats for around $600 or less.

You can go with Flowtech or Pacesetter-they're less expensive, but are made of thinner walled tubing. Performance would be the same. The more expensive headers have thicker walled tubing and even more expensive headers are stainless.
You need to set your price range and go from there.
Re: Fill in the gap... SLP Longtubes ____ SLP y pipe
Alright i've looked all day for headers. I have found some hooker headers that I think might do the trick. I think I can keep my SLP y-pipe and just weld a pipe to the headers. Here is the model ive found. HOK-2253-1HKR (on summit racing) Really its just the "2253" Its priced at 6 something but ive found it like 419.00 other pleaces. On their site they say this, "Includes O2 sensor extension harnesses for front O2 sensors, but requires two O2 “simulators” for rear O2 sensors which are not included." What is that and how much and where to buy? this is a link to summit's site - If I buy those what else will I need to buy - I'd like to not have cats b/c there are no emissions in Oklahoma. And I think I would be able to get buy with my ypipe now by welding a pipe in there. Any install kit id have to buy? Please someone help me out.
