Everything to know about an LS1
Hi everyone, I am (hopefully) about to by a new Camaro. I am moving up from a 94 LT1 to what seems to be a 98 LS1.
I have a huge about of questions, and yes, I have done a search already that answered some of my questions already
1) What are some know problems with the car. I know LT1's had an opti-spark, which was a complete pain. Does an LS1 have one? If not, what are some other problems that they have?
2) How much RWHP and RWTQ will a bone stock 98 LS1 Z28 M6 have?
3) What are some free mods that can be done on the LS1?
4) What kind of cat-back exhaust should I put on? I want a throaty sound that isn't as obnoxious as a Cut-out. Also, not one of those 700 dollar borla ones.
5) What are some cheap and easy bolt-ons I should think about doing? I want a steet legal car (aka, no LT
) and I am on a budget?
6) Lastly, what kind of 1/4 mile times should a bone-stock M6 get.
Thanks everyone!!! Can't wait to join this message board!

Welcome aboard!
1). Oil consumption between oil changes, rotors warp easily and piston slap. Not all will have piston slap or oil consumption but all came with crap rotors.
2). about 300 RWHP, not sure about torque but it'll be close to 300 as well.
3). Free ram air and descreen maf are the two most popular ones.
4). Hooker catback or magnaflow will give you what you are looking for in a catback. Listen to them both if possible and make a decision after that. I'd go with Magnaflow myself because it's stainless steel.
5). Lid (TSP is my choice), CAI (ARA ram air is my choice), underdrive pulley (ASP is my choice), ported throttle body (Baurs look nice) and 3.73 or 4.10 gears. But first and foremost for an M6 get a new shifter (B & M or 5.0) and a skip shift eliminator.
6). Anywhere from 12.9 to 13.9 would be my guess. A lot depends on the track elevation, weather and getting a good 60' time. I would expect to get low to mid 13 second time slips when bone stock.
Good Luck

Im with this guy. I just bought a 98 z28, which of course has the ls1. Now could someone please tlel me the exact differences? I have only been able to find opinions on this, I would like to hear just the differences between them. I know it has something to do with the lt1 being cast and the ls1 aluminium, but thats all i know. THanks
The F-body LT1 is iron block, aluminum heads, 2-bolt main. The 'Vette LT1 is a 4-bolt main. The LS1 is an all aluminum 6-bolt main. The LS1 heads outflow the LT1 heads a lot, but I believe the LT1s had a superior intake manifold design.
As mentioned before, the LT1 has it's oil leak, optispark/waterpump, and low-end stumbling issues, while the LS1 has oil consumption, piston slap, the weak rotors, etc.
The LT1 has a torquier feel to it that makes it seem more powerful in the low end and off the line (judged by the ***-o-meter,) while the LS1 will pull all the way to redline and never trail off.
