Do M6 LS1's really burn oil like I've been hearing?
Do M6 LS1's really burn oil like I've been hearing?
So I've been thinking about buying a 98 M6 Z28 and I've been having people tell me the M6's have a bad tendancy of buring oil. Is this true, and if so how common is it? Is it expensive to fix?

It is not transmission dependant.
The only oil consumption problem that I am aware of is on the 01 and 02 model year. 01 and 02 also have a valve train noise problem.

Here's some info on engine oil consumption in general... take it for what it's worth, as it came from the mouths of Ford Mo. Co.
My company runs a fleet of vehicles, we have mainly Chevy's, but we got a good deal on a Ford E-350 van. After running it a few months, we noticed a lot of oil consumption, about 2 quarts between changes. We returned it to the dealership for a consumption test. It was still under warranty at the time, they told us at first that it was within their standards for it to burn that much oil, then changed their minds and replaced the engine. They told us that a certain amount of oil consumption is actually built into newer engines, and that by burning a small amount of oil it helps keep the cylinders lubricated and extends engine life. 2 quarts was not reasonable, but they told us about a quart every 3000 miles was well within tolerances. That's what they told us, so again... take it for what it's worth.

My dads 2001 corvette burns about a quart of oil every 3k miles. there is in fact a fix for it, different piston rings. In fact in 2002 the ls1 engine came standard with the new pistong rings which are supposed to be better at not letting the oil past driving about 3k rpms. the bulliten says it is usually only a prob in the m6 because those are the only people who dirve at low load above 3k because an auto shifts you into a dif gear. I should mention i don have any oil consumpion and i drive at aroun 1800 rpms(even though according to gm this was fixed in the 2002 model). My dad with his vette however drived normally at like 2500 to 3k rpms. But they will fix the prob if you have warrenty and put in the new rings 2002 already has them though.
