If you're talking motor alone then i'd say the 01 or 02 is the best, powerwise that is. Some of the 02s came with the LS6 block but i'm not convinced there's any advantage to it. I like the 98-00 due to the fact there weren't so many issues with torque management especially for us A4 people. Hell they're all good and can be easily upgraded.

i dont think any year is fater than another....i just think it is luck of the draw. i raced a guy with a 2001 he had headers, corsa, springs, and a couple other minor bolt ons. my car has borla and a lid other tan that nothing. and i reamed him so bad it wasnt even funny. well, considering he had like twice as many mods as me.

If you're leaving it all stock, I'd say go with an 01 or 02. LS6-style intake, no EGR, possible LS6 block (only some of them), large injectors. They do also have a less aggressive cam (which allowed them to get rid of the external EGR).

If you're going to do a lot of modding and change out the intake/injectors/cam, then any of them will be fine. The LS6 block is stronger, but the LS1 block is plenty strong for most applications.

good luck,
Shane
