Did I burn my clutch!?
Well my rookie dumbutt went and tried to race for the first time in my '02 Z28...I had a good launch but missed 3rd and just backed off. Tried it again right after...I jacked up the rpm's and rode the clutch a little too much to stick better on my bs stock tires. About half-way it just wouldn't go. Wow I could really smell something burning! Drove in and parked...really bad smell. Let it cool down and it drives ok but I just know I damaged my clutch. Taking it in to the dealer soon. Even if I didn't burn it up...did I do enough damage to it that I should get it replaced?
I wouldn't worry just yet. I did much worse than that on an old stock clutch at the track one time. I burned it up bad during a burnout then mad launch following that.
Anyhow, to check if you're clutch is slipping...drive about 30-35mph. Shift to 6th gear and floor it. Your car should bog pretty bad and the rpms should slowly increase. If this happens you're golden. If your rpms jump up rapidly, then time for new clutch. Try it out and see what happens. Drop me an email if you have any other questions

I did that on my stock 01 clutch recently... I had never done a burnout (standstill) with a manual before, I tried to do one, but I held the clutch in too long, and it didn't catch, I noticed it was like an inch of the floor, so I hammered it back in again, and all this thick dark grey smoke started coming out of the engine bay, some into the interior... it smelled BAD. the clutch felt kindof soft, and it was a lot harder to feel the friction point. I let it cool down for a while, and after that it was better, but not much. It still drives ok though, I made my best ET a week after I did that. The worst in regular driving is the 1-2 shift, it's kindof sloppy unless you do it perfect, but all the other gears seem to still shift smoothly.. works great at the track though. I'm assuming I just melted half the life out of it. oh well. Gives me an excuse to put in a higher performance clutch.
Someone told me that maybe it was my slave cylinder I screwed up, which is covered under warranty. I don't think he's right though. I'm sure that was clutch smoking out of the engine.

I smoked my clutch one on of my first passes.I would smell it for days! Now my clutch is finally giving up on me.After 13000 miles and roughly 70 passes (10 without rear and headers) and it still lives to tell about it.I know 13000 miles isnt much for most people but I give my car hell. I totally abuse it and its fine. I say if it drives fine I wouldnt worry about it.
Heh heh ... I smoked my clutch one day trying to do a power-brake burnout.
The car drove sloppy for a while until I got home. After sitting overnight and cooling down, it drove fine.
As long as it drives OK, don't worry about it. You just took a little life off of it, that's all.
