Concern with "mystery" plug behind pilot bearing not sure what it is...pics inside

Ok, in changing my tranny and clutch my buddy noticed that there is this plug that he is calling a "freeze plug" . I think it's that oil gulley plug thingy or whatever it's called that prevents oil from gushing to the clutch. I've had my cam changed out and the clutch too a couple of yrs ago. It's right behind the pilot bearing.

His concern is that there is a gap that the plug is not covering. however it is not leaking and there is not 1 drop of oil anywhere. Keep in mind that if has been like this, then that means I've been driving it this way for at least 2yrs.

So Im looking for advice, whether or not we should proceed with installing everything and leave it like that? or anything else... let me know and thanks!

Here's the outside of course

Here is the plug and the gap (in yellow) he is concerned about

Here the plug overlaps the top part (in red) which seems not to be a problem again though the concern is coming from that gap circled in yellow as you can see the plug is not touching nor covering the metal part.

How did you remove the pilot bearing? That is a freeze plug. If you used the grease packing trick you popped it out of place. The only way to remove the pilot bearing on an LS1 is with a slide bar puller.

thanks! and to be honest I don't think he used a puller Im going to ask... but in the mean time, someone told me that you can take this one out by putting a hole in the middle of it ... I guess with a screw attached to it then use a hammer to grab said screw and pull it out.

Regardless how it comes out, is putting one back in a matter of just getting this old one out and just putting a new one in? without taking hundreds of things apart? lol

Yea most guys screw a long screw into it and pull it out. Just get it out and tap the new one back in. Just don't go too far or you will be doing this all over again.

Wouldn't hurt but isn't necessary. That plug just keeps slung oil in the crankcase.

That plug should be sealed. Red loctite works well. That is not a freeze plug. It's an oil galley plug.

It should be 1.25" from the end of the crank.

Are you measuring from the center of the freeze plug or the lip of the freeze plug to get your 1.25” measurement?
