is the clutch going?
Wouldnt know man, I've only been driving a manual for 1800 miles of my life =) I'll find out sometime, I'm sure... But I'm curious myself.

When the clutch started going out on my 95 Camaro you could tell because if you really got on it the engine was a lot louder and not going as fast as it used to, and if you are in like 4th or 5th (it was a v6 only 5-speed) and pressed the gas the rpm's would go up anywhere from 500-1000 before the car would begin to speed up.. at which time the rpm's would go back to where they had been and continue to climb while accelerating.
Dont know if that helps much, that is just the 2 things I remember happening the most when my clutch was going out.

Accelerate normally up to around 35mph. Put it in 6th gear and floor the pedal. If it bogs or accelerates very slowly then the clutch is fine. If the rpms shoot up any, the clutch is slipping.

On both my LT1 and my LS1 the clutch's engagement point slowly moved up the lever's travel until it was at the very top (ie, your foot was as far off the floor as it could get before the engagement point was hit)... this was the first sign of my clutch dying.
The second sign is that when you floor it at low rpms (ie 1500-2500) the engine revs up too fast for the miles per hour you are actually going, sorta like you are spinning your tires a bit but you aren't... as your rpms go up higher the slipping will stop and the clutch will do it's job. While the clutch is slipping you are not accelerating as fast as you should be, once you rev higher the clutch will "catch" and you will accelerate correctly. You WILL notice this when it begins to happen, it is impossible to miss. Once it starts to happen you had best stop the tire smoking launches and low rpm punches because it will become unusable QUICK if you continue to abuse it.
My LS1 clutch began slipping at 14,000 miles. My LS1 now has 15,000 miles and I will be replacing the clutch in the next month or two. I did not stop abusing it and it is toast after less than a month and 1000 miles upon noticing the problem.
My LT1 clutch began slipping at about 35,000 miles (about 5 years ago!)... it now has 83,000 miles on it and still hasn't been swapped. However, when it started slipping I stopped abusing it and the car became my daily driver, and the tired clutch has lasted a very very long time because of the lack of additional abuse.
I drove both pretty much the same before the clutches started slipping, however I modded the LS1 alot and it makes *alot* more power than my LT1 so it died alot faster because of that I guess.

the slipping in 4th moved into 3 rd in a matter of days, and i dont drive the car agressively. When it started slipping real bad up a hill on the way home the other night, i knew its time was up, the next day i had a new one put in.
What if the clutch chatters? Is that bad? When you let it out it begins to vibrate a bit? I think mine might be going out too or may need some type of adjustment because it chatters when i let it ou most off the time and the car grinds the gears a little every now and then, mostly in colder weather. like 50* or lower.... any help would be greatly appreciated.. thanks
