Change Oil Light

Tonight on my way home my change oil light came one for about 5-10mins then went off. Since I had the oil changed about 100 miles ago with Mobil 1. I was wondering why the light might come on like that? It has never come on befor even when I was due for one.

Also can someone tell me how many Qts a 2001 Z28 takes and why the dip stick does not have an add oil line? All my other cars including my 98WS6 had a line showing when I was low on oil. Can someone explain how to read these new sticks?

Thanks,

Bill

Re: Change Oil Light

The oil light was not reset. to reset it, turn the key on, engine off and press the gas pedal three times. your car should take 5.5 to 6 quarts of oil.

Fixed.

Different GM cars use different tricks to reset the light - the ex's Saturn L300 had a button under the hood.

Re: Change Oil Light

Just had my light come on for the 1st time as well, and I've owned the SS almost 7 years now I think mine came on due to the last oil change being in April...I've put less than 500 mi. on the car since then, but I guess it's coming on to tell the oil life is getting less effective? I use Mobil 1, and have the car scheduled for Monday just to be safe.

Thanks for the tip on resetting the light

I don't trust that light, especially when the manual says it'll come on anywhere from 3-10K miles after resetting it. I always reset it anyway after each change by the method in the manual - it's only come on once a couple years ago after about 4K. I use synthetic and change it at 6K.

Thanks for the help! I did it and it is no longer on.

Do you know if there is a low oil light in a 01 Z showing if you are down on oil?

Thanks Again,

Bill

Re: Change Oil Light

My '01 T/A has a low oil light that comes on when the engine has too little oil in it as well as the "idiot light" that comes on every XX,000 miles. Easiest way to check is to see if there's a light that says "Low Oil" or "Oil Level" that comes on when you first turn the key to the on position. As for the original question about the dipstick, mine has a hashed area and the bottom of that is the line at which you add oil if it goes below. And my "idiot light" gets reset by the trip reset button right next to the odometer.

Yes, the low oil light sensor is on the passenger side of the pan.

They work at Jiffy Lube! They dont know jack!

Change your own oil!

I use 6qts. Always Mobil 1.. And I change it btw 7-13K miles when the light comes on.. I have had 0 problems and have a fairly strong bone stock car.

True that, people who work at jiffy lube are high school dropouts who dont know ****, they will strip your oil pan bolt, not oil up the filter etc.. Dont ever go there.

Re: Change Oil Light

I believe the owner's manual and service manual both say 5.5 quarts, but the dipstick usually shows full at 6 quarts.
