Car Starts, The Dies, Then Wont Start
Car Starts, The Dies, Then Wont Start
Went out to start my car this morning..and it fired right up..but died off right away. I tried again..and it would just crank..but not fire..i waited a couple mins..tried again..shes started and i gave her some gas...then she died again. I did notice that when i gave it gas..my RPM gauge did not move. What could be the problem??
Re: Car Starts, The Dies, Then Wont Start
actually i had a very similar thing happen to my 96z with a bad MAF sensor. would start and barely run, die on me...and only move if i really gave it gas.
on a blinde notion i unplugged the MAF and it purred like a kitten. installed the original MAF (had a recalibrated ZO6) and it has run great since.
try unplugging it, that causes it into limp home mode and will tell you if it's the maf or possibly another sensor.

Re: Car Starts, The Dies, Then Wont Start
Teke the reason why i dont think its the maf..is the car starts..and immediatly dies..doesnt even bog.
I think its the fuel pump..Tell me if im wrong..but when you put the key to ACC position..you can usually hear the fuel pump prime correct? I dont hear it...and my gas gauge doesnt move at all which is weird... But why when i revved it up the 2nd time i got it to start...the tach gauge didnt move?

Re: Car Starts, The Dies, Then Wont Start
yea i unplugged it..still nothing
I put a screw driver in the fuel rail on the drivers side..where it has that stem in it..alittle bit of fuel came out..so i tried to start the car again...nothing..i pushed the stem in again..and no fuel came out..so im assuming my pumps shot. Cuz its not getting any fuel up to the fuel rail. And like i said..i dont here the fuel pump priming.

Re: Car Starts, The Dies, Then Wont Start
first u need to turn the key to the run position and have someone listen at the gas tank with the cap off for it to run. then check your fuse and relay. my personal opinion is get it to a shop, someone that knows there way around gm cars. u guys might flame me but take it to a dealer it will be cheaper in the long run. and yes i do work at a gm dealer. does your key have the resistor in it? if it does do u have a security light and is it blinking when the key is turned on?
Re: Car Starts, The Dies, Then Wont Start
no the its not the that VATS system...no security light..the car actually cranks..but dosent turn. Again as i said before..when you turn your go to the run position..you usually hear the pump prime the system..well i dont hear anything..and no fuel is coming outta the scrader valve when i release it.
Re: Car Starts, The Dies, Then Wont Start
Sounds like the fuel pump but thats not exactly common on our cars....
Change the filter and see if it at least gets better....
It is firing at all? If not maybe the alt. went out at the same time as the battery? Happened to me before.....It would crank but not fire, then after a minutre it would crank some more, but never fire.
If its firing forget the alt & battery.
