Can a Tach be corrected

I just bought a 2000 SS with a M6.The tach says it idles at 1300 rpm, so I hooked up a scanner and found out that it actually idles at 800 rpm. We varied the throttle and the tach is always about 500 rpm too high.So my question is can this be fixed and what should I look for to fix it.

If it's always off by 500 RPM I would pull the plastic cover off the cluster, remove the needle, and installit at the right RPM using your scanner.

P.S. I had to do this to my wifes 96 vert.
