replaced cats, SES light still on
replaced cats, SES light still on
Went to get my emissions test done and I failed with 4 codes being thrown.
P0430
P0420
P0174
P0171
I got my cats removed and replaced (thank god thats under the 80,000mi powertrain warranty). Now its throwing just two codes.
P0430
P0420
What do you guys think is the most common issue that could cause this behavior. How much would it cost or would it be covered in the warranty(almost paid over $700.00 for the cats until i found out they were under warranty, 55,000mi on the car)? I just dont want to get into fixing one sensor, then fixing another one, then finally figuring out it was something else, thus causing me to spend alot more money.
-THanks in advance

P0420 and P0430 are the cat codes for both sides - dealer should've cleared them after replacement?????? Call them. You can also get the particulars on them at www.gearchatter.com
well my SES light was cleared. after about 20 miles the light came back on. The dealer did write on the reciept that there were two codes still being thrown. Should these codes be taken care of under warranty? Is it wise to go back and say these codes point to the cats? I was under the impression that there are a number of things that could cause it even though it points to the cats.
you know what, i might be saying it backwards. this is what the receipt says exactly in the notes section:
"55309 PO420 AND PO430 SET CONVERTERS INEFFICIENT L2300 .9 A.3 1.2 PERFORMED DIAGNOSTICS CHECK AND ISNSPECT CONVERTERS REPLACE BOTH CONVERTERS AND CLEAR CODE NOTE HAD SOME OTHER CODES."
When I called the guy at the dealership he explained it as PO420 and PO430 were the remaining codes but when i read it carefully it doesnt seem that way. So I guess ill have to have the codes read again to see what exactly it is throwing.
thanks alot by the way

Alright heres the update:
2001NBMZ28 was right, the car was still throwing the codes for P0174 and P0171. My mechanic replaced the EGR valve solenoid and a vaccum hose. both codes were cleared. AFter my mechanic drove it for 60 miles, P0430 came back on. He said one of the cats must be bad. So I took it back to the dealership and they put it on the lift to verify they did install two new converters. Dont know what I was looking for but they both looked identical in wear and tear.
Does the code P0430 always point to the cats or can it be something else? If it does then I will take it to the dealership and tell them one of the cats must be bad. I dont want to pay for diagnostics that the dealership charges if they find out its somehting else.

Most of the time it's the cat, if the code was cleared drive it a while and see if it comes back on. P0430 is the passenger side. There are a couple other possibilities - www.gearchatter.com/viewtopic9138.php
well its not clear, the light is on and its throwing P0430.
From that link you gave me it seems like that if its not the cats then it must be some other part of the exhaust system that is leaking or damaged or missing. Is that correct?
THanks

YIKES!
Just read through all the posts again. Don't know what the mechanic is doing driving the car 60 miles, or what EGR valve solenoid was replaced (01-02 cars don't have EGR). I'd go by auto zone or somewhere and have the code cleared - or reset the PCM yourself and see if P0430 comes back on. If it does and you don't have any obvious exhaust leaks the dealer didn't check the 02 sensor wiring or something when they replaced that cat. Bring it back.
Don't know what that PN is, but 01-02 cars don't have EGR. You can reset the codes/PCM yourself:
Turn key on, don't start car
Pull PCM BATT and PCM IGN fuses in engine compartment
Wait 5 - 10 min
Turn ignition off
Replace fuses
