I had mine welded on the i-pipe just before it goes over the rear axle, here's a small pic.

I got mine welded on right where the pipe makes the 90 degree turn into the muffler. I wanted to put it as far back as possible because I have heard people complain about the interior of the car getting hotter. You also may want to consider putting in an electric switch for the cut out.

yeah, put it far back because heat raises into the car and it may vibrate. i'm getting ready to put one on as well. BTW What's a resonable price to weld on one?

The farther back the better. Up too close to the front and you'll drown yourself out with noise. You'll get excessive interior drone regardless of where the cutout is..however farther back won't drone out as bad as in the front. On our SS we have the cutout right before the rear axle.

Check out ls1.com and search for dynomouth. I just did this as opposed to the cutout; deep, mellow, and open 24/7. Shop charged me 200 including the bullet muffler and labor. Also offered it for 120 for a 2OTL style. 10x better than cutout me thinks and is akin to an inexpensive SLP loudmouth or gmmg chambered. Check into, you'll thank yourself.

I put mine right before the bend over the axel which is right behind the rear passenger's side seat. The floor right above it gets a little warm but not nearly hot enough to burn anything or even my skin for that matter. Maybe about as hot as one of those little hand warmer shakey things.

And I cannot stand driving with the cutout capped, ever! Even with gutted cats. First of all its just waaaay too quiet for my taste and second, there is a definate loss in power with the cap on. (obviously)
