Best heads for LS1
Best heads for LS1
I am looking for the best performing heads for the LS1/LS2 motor. This will be a street driven vehicle. I am not looking to go to a cam that will give it a lot of lope at idle, just good all around performance. Hoping to get 450 rwhp with just heads, a mild cam, headers, exhaust, intake, intake manifold, pulleys, and a dyno tune. Oh, I will use a lightweight flywheel and an aluminum driveshaft to more efficiently put the power to the ground.
Is this possible for an LS1 or should I upgrade to an LS2? No forced induction. I already have a turbo car, I just want pure V8 power from this one. Any help is appreciated. Post dyno #'s if you've got them.

Re: Best heads for LS1
wow what you ask for is not possible if you consider the 224/224 a mild cam... with heads, then cam, and boltons you should be more along the lines of 410ish rwph and the only way to hit that goal is to do something like more agressive cam... going to an ls2 would be a waste of money on a camaro/bird
It might be more reaslistic to set a goal on a 1/4 mile time... with boltons you can hit high 11s and with a cam you can get into the mid to low 11s.... or to build a stroker motor might help you hit that goal... someone with knowledge on that will help you such as victory racing engines...
ohh yeah and you are going to have to add a new rearend to the cost since the 10 bolt can barely hold with minor boltons... your also going to need some suspension stuff and tires to put that power to the ground
also some ls1s came with Al driveshafts.
do you have a camaro/bird?

Re: Best heads for LS1
AFR 205cc heads would be good for an NA motor. You'll have to go w/ a bigger cam to get to 450. You can specify the LSA on the cam to get the idle you want.
I hear a lot about the 4.8L and 5.2L heads. -not sure on specs on them tho.
Yeah, the LS2'd be a bit much just to see 450rwhp. It's actually qutie attainable on an LS1, just have to get the right H/C, do some other bolt ons too, electric water pump, LS6/LSX intake....etc...
Look into the F14 cam or the TSP torquer. All have different LSA/idle specs.

Re: Best heads for LS1
yeah you're not gonna hit 450rwhp with a mild cam no matter what heads you get
my TSP torquer lopes pretty hard at idle. currently running stock heads and putting down about 400rwhp, but with heads i'm hoping for nearly 440rwhp...maybe 450 with some killer tuning.

Re: Best heads for LS1
The Dart 225cc heads are what I'm going with. They flow 20 more cfm than the AFR 205s (280s vs low 300s as flowed by an independant shop) and are hundreds of dollars cheaper. I'll tell you how they perform tomorrow

1) I do not have a Camaro or Trans Am, had a 99 Z and some teenage girl hit it and totaled it.
2) I am currently doing an LS motor swap into a 1995 Mazda RX-7, also known as an FD, hence the name LS1 FD.
3) This project requires a custom driveshaft, so the stock ones aren't important. My 99' had an Aluminum driveshaft from the factory, but obviously it doesn't fit the FD.
4) This is not a drag car. It will be used mostly for Auto X.
5) 450 is a soft goal, if I make less power than that, no big deal. I just want the most possible power while retaining close to stock streetability.
6) The reason I am considering an LS2 is because I may eventually go with the 402 stroker. If I start with the LS2 then I don't have to buy a new block. I can run 11:1 compression and a pretty mild cam and still make good power.
Sorry for not including all of this the first time. Let me know what you guys think, and thanks for the help so far. I appreciate the info.

Re: Best heads for LS1
There is a member on here, Jordan Musser, who did the exact same thing you are looking to do with the RX7. He has many posts on it and his website is www.fastblackcar.com That would be the man to ask if you have any specific questions regarding the swap.
