best bang for the buck

i have a almost stock 98 Z A4 just a lid and cutout what would be the best way to lower 1/4 miles times with the least amount of money i was thinking about N20 but only cuz it is cheaper then anything i can think of

does anyone have ideas on anything that would add almost the same amount of power or more for the same price i was also thinking about a cam but what are you guys thoughts

Nitto 555R drag radials and nitrous will put you in the 11s/low 12s depending on nitrous kit.

The best thing to get would be a stall converter if you have an automatic transmission.. The next thing to get would be headers, either midlengths or long tubes.... its pretty basic.

A converter by itself may not help much if the car spins. I would start with tires, then the converter.

If you use your car for alot of street driving I would not go with the TQ, its tricky to get used to, and it will also ware out the tranny, even though .5 of a secand can be gained. N2O is your best bet for the track and some street use. I just got an NX wet kit--for the kit and install it was $800 which is about the same for a TQ. And there isn't anything that with will improve 1/4 mile times for the same amount of money than nitrous.

Here's my $.02, based on recently installing 3.73's in my car:

GET TRACTION!!!

All the power in the world isn't worth $h!t if you can't put it to the ground. That's currently my problem now...............I think a set of drag radials or ET Streets would help out significantly at this point in time (better than anything). THEN, when you add nitrous, or a TQ converter, or whatever else you decide to do, you won't waste half a second spinning off the line.

that is definetly my problem now and I'm working on that next, but you can find some used salad shooters and et streets pretty cheap for the track, but until you get traction you can run the 50 or 75 shot and still get pretty good traction. but also with nitrous you will most likely need to up grade plugs (NGK TR6's) and mabey wires with a 100 shot and you will need more ignition stuff with retard capabilities when running a 150 shot, I suggest doing some more resurch before making a decision, a cam would also be a good investment, but very expiencive to install unless you can do it yourself.

If you're going to spray you probably don't care about the tranny wear from running a smaller converter. lol

A trans cooler is a great idea for anyone running a smaller converter. This said, I drove my 70 SS around from '91 until a year ago with a 10" converter and 4.11 gears. I never had one trans problem.

I agree, traction is everything. I've won races because of it and lost some because of the lack of it. The only problem with hooking hard on 4th gens is the weak rear end. If you start launching hard, you'll start breaking stuff. There is the rear cover that you can preload your caps, but I haven't talked to anyone that has used it on the 7.5" to know if it works. I've been told its does on the 8.5" though.

Also get some subframe connectors before you start launching hard. You'll be glad you did later.

thanks this car isn't heading to the track more then 4 or 5 times a year so it has to be pretty street able thats why i was thinking of just running a 100 shot on the stock motor so i could just leave it alone if i didn'y need the power any other suggestions would be great

I have a 3000 stall Converter and use my car for a daily driver. I love it. I've had two f-bodies and both were a4 cars. Out of all of the mods I've done, the best bang for the buck was Headers (on my 95) and a High Stall Converter.
A Converter will help you harness the power you all ready have!

Good Luck!

I know a couple guys running Mickey Thompson ET Streets on a '99 Vette and an '01 WS6. Let me say, they hook like mad!

Look here for the Mickey T's. You can also check out Hoosier's website (although I don't think they make any street legal drag tires ) and BF Goodrich make drag radials. On their page, go to "Sports Car" tires, then look at the Comp TA Drag Radials. They're supposed to work pretty well too, and I think they're a few bucks cheaper than the Mickey T's (and better if you get caught in the rain!).

I'll second that.

There's lots more to getting your times down than just adding a helluva lot of horsepower.
