Battery gauge reading on run low
Battery gauge reading on run low
Hi everyone,
I have a 2002 Z28. Get it serviced and maintained regularly. I had a problem recently. The battery guage is supposed to read between 11 and 16 volts normally. This is the case when the engine is not running. Even when the engine is running it should be in the same zone.
Well in my case, the guage went below 11 volts..in the red zone (when the engine was not running. ignition in run position), the check guages light came on. But when i start the engine..the guage goes back to normal. But whenever the engine is not running, it goes below 11 in the red zone. I assume that the reading is normal when the engine is running because the alternator feeds the supply in.
Had it checked at the dealer..they said the battery was good..did some load test..and in the end replaced my alternator. Well I thought everything was fine..but nope..still the same. I haven't run anything without having the engine running first..so i couldn't call this a battery drain.
Any ideas? I know that i get some pretty good stuff on this forum.
Thanks everyone
Kind Regards
Aby

Hi, hows it going?
I had the same problem as you a while ago, only I drained my battery twice, needing a jump start, and also providing jump starts to my friends.
My car got to the point where if I left my lights on for more than two seconds when the car is off, the car wouldn't have enough juice to start. Took it to the dealer, to find out that I had a battery leak. Replaced it, and I was good to go.
How old is your battery? Have you ever drained it?

Hi SpecForceZ28,
Thanks so much for the reply..that was simply so precise..well i hope to check with the folks there tomorrow..they told me that my battery was fine...well i'll have them check to see if there any leaks like you said..
my battery was the original one with the car..so 2 years old now..and i have never drained it..when you say drain it..just run some appliance on when the car engine is not running?
I am just wondering if it can be that some appliance is drawing power while the car is off..i mean i know i don't have anything on..
Thanks for the reply SpecForce
Kind Regards
