Automatic vs Manual in longitivity?

I heard from someone that autos trannys tend to break down more than manuals. It's the first i've heard of this. I always thought it depended on how the car is driven.

Any info from you guys would be appreiciated.

The T56 is an awesome tranny. It can take some big amounts of power, only needing to upgrade the clutch. On a A4 you'll need to rebuild it to take the same amount of power.

That is true but autos are easier on your rear end.

Be careful with the T56s though. They can hold the power, but many are having problems with over-travel in the shifter. It's damaging the tranny to the point of a full rebuild. The stock internal stops are quite weak compared to an aftermarket shifter. The cars are starting to get some miles on them and not to mention the fun we like to have, and it all adds up.

But generally, I'd think that both would be pretty equal if driven appropriately (especially with todays technology).

So If I have the stops set right on my Pro 5.0, I shouldnt have anything to worry about?

Not from shifter overtravel. There are other ways to damage the T56 though.

I would'nt worry about because they are both equal in the comparsion, the A4 will cost more in maintainence because of fluid changes but it won't burn up in 40,000 because ofa manual clutch. M6 will give better mpg on highway but auto may have an advantage in city. Bottom line just get what you prefer driving, me, i hope to have one of each in the future.

The stock A4 trannys just cannot handle BIG torque (you have to get them rebuilt or replace them with something stronger)...but the M6 can. Yes, you have to replace the clutch and possibly replace the rear end of an M6 car before you would with an A4 car...but if you're talking about JUST the tranny, the T-56 is stronger and more durable.
