Anyone put 4.10 gears in a 98-02 NON SS or WS6 Fbody?
Anyone put 4.10 gears in a 98-02 NON SS or WS6 Fbody?
My friend is trying to put 4.10 gears and posi unit in his 1995 ta. The posi unit is out of a 2001 Z28. the paddle pin hits on the ring gear. I have heard of people grinding the ring gear to get the paddle pin out and or grinding the paddle pin to get it out. Without getting the paddle pin out you can not put the clips on the axels. so do you grind the ring gear? or do you grind the paddle piN? anyone have any pics when doing this?
THanks

thats funny since my ws6 came with an auburn and the zexel torson wasnt an option
it was an option for all SS as an SLP option and all firehawks as an SLP option..
And in 99 it was standard on all f-bodies

The problem isn't the fact that it is a Torsen or Auburn, but rather that he probably has a 2 series carrier and 3 series gear, or vice versa.
For the record, all '93-'98 V8 F-bodies have an Auburn style posi except for the '96-'98 SLP cars (SS/Firehawk) that opted for the then optional Torsen. All '99-'02 V8 F-bodies have a Zexel Torsen except for the SLP cars that opted for the option Auburn. WS6 cars have not had an optional carrier to my knowledge.

THis is what is wrong. In order to put 4.10 in a new style carrier you have to put a new SLP paddle pin in the middle of the carrier that is a little different. The paddle pin cost 129.99 when the carrier only cost 95. so here is the question. I know that you can just grind the paddle pin a little bit or just enough to get it out or you can grind the gear just enough. but my question is which one would be better to grind?

You have to grind the paddle pin, I dont know where exactly, you shodl be able to tell when you go to put hte paddle in, but it almost sounds like its already together, and you are trying to grind it to get it apart. (you keep saying "get it out") if this is the case you are screwed. that means the installer hammered it in there, and youll probably have to grind the ring gear to get it out. IMO this is bad. I would never grind on a ring gear.
Freak is right.
I install gears for people when I have time. I have personally done a few set's that were 4.10 ratio in late model f- bods. The 4.10 ring gear is thicker and you can either spend the ridiculous price for the new SLP paddle. Or you can grind 2 "dimples" as I call them, in the old paddle. The paddle doesn't move once installed and nothing "rides" against it. It simply holds the alxes out so that the c-clips stay in. So again the smartest thing is just to grind a couple of "dimples" in the paddle. Don't grind the ring gear teeth. There are only 2 that hit, but you should grind the paddle as it does not compromise the intregrity of the paddle or the rearend as a unit.
