A4 clunking sound

I've noticed sometimes in normal driving, usually stop and go traffic where you'll go from 0-20mph-0, over and over again, I'll hear the transmission making "hard shifts" or clunking noises. It'll usually happen with minimal throttle and the transmission shifts from 1st to 2nd (with the A4). My 2002 Z has about 23,000 miles and has always done this in this type of scenario. I don't notice it when I am more aggressive with the throttle with harder acceleration. I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem. It's not an extreme "clunking" sound, it's just a bit annoying.

Lightbulb My 99 does that on occasion, too.

But, there is no real consistency to it.

I guess it is a fluke in the PCM programming where it decides it needs a firmer shift under part throttle - ?

With the sloppy rear ends these cars get, I suppose that could add to the effect as well.

However, I am coming up on 44K and no troubles that I know of so far - fluid is clear (been changed twice) , seems to operate O.K. other than that, so I am not gonna worry 'bout it.

I guess I'll know for sure in another 44K or so !

I had the same problem since i got my car back in March 2001. I finally had it looked into, by a family trusted mechanic. It is not normal at all.

It turned out to be a broken transmission mount. I'm not talking about stressed, fractured or cracked. I mean broken in two. I had it replaced and have not heard the "klunk" since. That was about 2 weeks ago.
