5.0 or LS1????
5.0 or LS1????
hey guys i have a 98 Z28, 6spd with 26,000 miles on it and im thinking about getting rid of it for an older 5.0 stang. I dont know why but there is something about the 5.0s that i love. Do u guys think it would be worth it? Best track time to date on my ls1 is a 13.9@106mph <-----spins to hard off the line. My dad and all his ford mechanic buddies are telling me to get the 5.0 and throw some aluminium heads on it what do u think? no flames please i also posted this at stangnet, just trying to do the cheap thing
if you want to go to the dark side a 5.0 is the best way to do it. But then again why are you getting rid of you LS1, you can get a 5.0 for about 3,000. If you are going to chop it up for a drag car i would get the cheapest one you can find. Another benefit of 5.0's is the parts are pretty cheap and easy to find. You could easily squeze out a time better than a 13.9 with you LS1. You only need about 3 grand and your set. 4.10 Gears, DR's, some suspension parts, full exhaust, LT headers, and a cam, combo is good for 400 rwhp, and easy mid 12's with good driving.

The problem is what you just said, you're spinning the tires off the line. Look into some ways that you can transfer that power tot he ground easier. Rear suspention mods? Diffrent tire combo....
Are you launching at the right RPM?

It depends on what you want.
If you want a 10 sec. "race" car then I'd say go with the 5.0...if you want a mid-low 12 sec. daily driver (or capable of being a DD) then I'd say stick with the LS1.
Don't worry about your cars ET. I personally think trap speed is what really counts and yours is pretty good. Get to a track where you can hook or buy a pair of DRs and you should see some low 13 sec. passes. Well, your launching technique could be the problem so a little practice could help lower your ET down to where it should be.

Here's my advice: Go drive one and see if you like it. They're not for everyone. They sit much more upright than 4th gens do. When you say 5.0, do you mean the fox-body (79-93)? Or the SN95 (94-95)?
It's certainly much easier to build up a fox body 5.0 than a 4th gen, and significantly cheaper. But then again even the newest fox is now 10 years old; so finding one with low milage and in good condition becomes increasingly difficult.
If straightline performance for cheap is all you want, then it's pretty damn tough to beat a 5.0. Just remember, all cars have their share of problems. Some are correctable, some are inherent to their design.

rofl @ going for 5.0 instead of keeping ur ls1, are u crazy!! there is so many parts u can get for ur ls1 camaro to have u in the 9's simply.. takes money though. it probably the way u drive it at the track that makes ur car slow, try differ styles, of doing the quater mile, like
1.Powershifting (keeping ur foot on the gas while shifting)*don't shift at any higher at 4000 there.. could screw up the motor
2.No Granny shifting, make sure ur atleast shifting at 5,500, take advantage of all ur hp.
3.take off that damn traction control shiz
4.skip shift http://www.ls1.com/link_cags.html
5.free mods http://www.ls1.com/index_ls1_mods.html
6.take weight off
try a race with skip shift off, and with powershifting.. i'm sure u well do 12.8 - 13.6, aslong as u don't screw up

perhaps if you were making a dedicated race only drag car, I would go with a 5.0 because its way cheaper, and the fox body is lighter...
but if its your daily driver, your ls1 is going to be alot more comfortable and has the potential to go just as fast..

Agree with the daily driver comment though.

I meant being just as fast as a daily driver.. i don't think there are any 7 second daily drivers - as in a car I can drive cross country and in bad weather without thinking twice..

True, I don't know of any LS1's in the 7's.. I bet push comes to shove, someone could come around and make one for tons of $$$..
If your MAIN priority is to drag race, and forgoing some creature comforts, get the Mustang.
Just sit down and rank what you want out of your car.. How far on the scale do you want to go for drag racing.. how serious..
Best of both worlds? Keep the LS1, get intact tired old 5.0 for racing only. Ask you dad and his friends to help you work on it and tow it to the tracks.
