4L60E Won't shift past 2

I bought a 2001 LS1 with Tranny from Contemporary Corvette in PA.... The motor runs beautifully but the traqnny won't shift past 2nd. We have changed fluids and added Lucas to see if it would help...... We have redlined it to kingdom come but the ****ing thing just won't shift past 2nd... Anyone know what could be the problem.????? If anyone lives in Orlando and you could help me out and take a look at it I would be thankful.... HELP....

passing gear messed up maybe? 3rd or 4th? I believe it may also be a torque converter problem. My buddies stang tranny messed up when he accidentally pressed overdrive off button at about 100 mph. It wouldn't shift passed second.

What do you mean passing gear? I am new to this auto tranny BS.... I have only ever driven manuals up until this latest motor swap...... What might be messed up in the torque converter???????? Plus in the shop manual it says the control valves may be sticking which is what a few of my friends think too. How would I get them "un stuck??"

Sorry I didn't mean to confuse you. Don't really know much about the tranny. Just talking out of experience and what I was told.

Don't know how to get them unstuck, but have a mechanic that you trust look at it.

North American Transmission by the Citrus Bowl (on Tampa Ave I think)

Talk to Buddy. That's who rebuilt my TH350 and they did a great job. He can probably tell you just by calling on the phone. He really seemed to know what he was talking about.

Thanx for your help.... I don't think I could have burnt the bands out so quick. the engine has 7400 miles on it and from the moment I got it running it wouldn't past 1st then with a little lucas oil additive and some persuasion she started to shift to 2nd.... do you guys realize how fast you can go in 2nd... it is friggin' unreal.. I just became a V8 guy... I usede to have the old 3.4l AND NOW THIS... It is wonderful to join you guys in your earch for speed.

Pull the fuse for the shift solenoids or disconnect the large gray 20 -way connector on the trans., this should default you to 3rd. If you only have 1st then your 3-4 clutches in your input housing are probably burned up, or possibly a really bad stuck valve. If your fluid isn't burnt then your clutches are probably fine and you have a sticking valve(s). Your band is for 2nd and 4th so it doesn't factor in in 3rd. Since you mentioned the trans. wouldn't shift out of 1st until you persuaded it, I would suspect sticking valves. If you want to attempt a cheap repair, pull the pan and you will see four solenoids. There are two that are close together, these are the shift solenoids. You will see a metal wire in the valve body right behind them, this is the retainer clip. I think the 2-3 sol. is on the passenger side of the valve body. Pull the clip and see if you can get the valve out with a pick. You will know you have the correct one if there isn't a spring behind it, forcing it out. The 1-2 valve has a spring, the 2-3 doesn't. If you can't move the valves then pull the valve body and try moving it with a pick through the worm tracks. If it won't move, get another valve body. It's a good idea to pull the spacer plate and check for debris on top of it. When installing the new valve body, make sure the bolts go in the right holes, if you only have 2nd, 4th and reverse, you have the long bolt in the wrong hole. It's a pretty easy repair if you have a manual. Hope this helps.

I don't mean to laugh at your plight, but this is funny to me because this just happened to me last week.

I burned out my 3rd and 4th gears in my 4L60E, and the trans only had 5000 miles on it since its last rebuild.

So, yes, it is possible for it to happen that quick. There is no fix for it other than a rebuid.
