SO, there are probably lots of cases of guys busting their 4.10's, but chances are they were behind an M6 . With the stock 10-bolt, ANY gear is vulnerable behind the M6!

Behind an auto, I'm not as worried about breaking something as I would be with a stick. So whether you've got 3.73's or 4.10's, I think there's probably an equal chance of the gears lasting/breaking. But maybe that's just my opinion??

Re: 4.10 on A4 SS?

I had 4.10s in the 4 speed, and highway driving wasn't bad at all, it was louder, but not bad-depends on your exhaust and if it drones at certain rpms. On my last exhaust running aright at 2 grand my exhaust droned like crazy so I was always trying to keep the rpms up higher to avoid it. Gas mileage will suffer some unless you go slower to keep the rpms down. The fun factor is great, it really moves the car, although first is quick, its much more enjoyable than 2 with its big gear drop. The only way I would hesitate to go with those gears is if gas mileage is a concern. On my current car I have 4.10s but want even more gear-I'm still debating to go with 4.30s or 4.56s. It would be a no brainer but with these weak rears 4.56 might not last to long. With your 4.10 you would actually have more gear than my 4.56 gear 4.56 x 2.66 =12.12 4.10 x 3.06 =12.5 So its alot of gear, but for the street its pretty fun. The other guy was right I think you stand a much greater chance of breaking gears in a manual trans since you can't preload the rear like you can with an auto, all that shock from dropping the clutch is pretty hard on these rears. Why couldn't Gm just have given us something stronger-hopefully that new camaro will be better equipped
