4.10 on A4 SS?
ok so its a done deal..im installing the hooker supercomp headers and y pipe on my 02 SS by the end of next week..hopefully sooner...now i have the idea of putting a 4.10 in there...good idea? lots of adivse wanted! thanks
Re: 4.10 on A4 SS?
With 4.10s, you'd be a little over 2600rpm at 70mph in 4th. For drag racing, it would mean you might end up shifting into 4th before you cross the line. Probably not if you're stock though... redline would come up at 112mph in 3rd. The 3.73s will carry you to 123mph in 3rd. The 4l60e isn't known for handling a wot 3-4 gear change very well so it might be best to avoid that at the strip.

Buncha pu$$ies!!
Go with the 4.10's
.
I've had/have 3.73's and 4.10's with my A4. Going from 2.73 to 3.73 was a big jump, but from 3.73 to 4.10 isn't that much worse on the highway, and for 1/4 mile running, they're awesome
. If you start running real fast at the track, you've got the option of going with bigger tires, and/or higher rev limit (beefed up valvetrain required) to compensate for the top speed of 3rd gear.
I suppose if you were gonna run nitrous or something though, you may want to hold back at the 3.73 mark?

Re: 4.10 on A4 SS?
Another vote for 3.73's....and one reason the 3>4 shift is known for being hard on our trans is because there's no torqure reduction in the factory tune for the 3>4 like there is for the 1>2 and 2>3. Just before the trans shifts, the pcm pulls a huge chunk of timing for a split second so engine power is reduced. This gives the trans a fraction of a second to get into the next gear without the effects of a "power shift." Many tuners reduce or remove torque management when tuning A4's. But, I've always thought to keep at least half of the factory settings and even added torque management to my 3>4 shift just to be safe.
Re: 4.10 on A4 SS?
yea well i hear from friends that at a cruising speed on the highway...i could be running at 4000 rpm...thats actually really high and it seems like it would do harm to the car in some way..or would it?...im still not convinced between the 3.73 and the 4.10 but im leaning more towards the 3.73

. That's with 4.10's. 3.73's are slightly lower RPM's on the highway.I'd like the proof how 4.10's are weaker than 3.73's though
. I've heard this time and time again, but I don't know the reasoning or justification?? The ring gear is pretty much the same 41 tooth gear as 2.73's, 3.42's, and 3.73's have!
The only thing different is the pinion has 10 teeth instead of 11, 12, or 15.
