20w50 oil in my ls1?

If you want to have to rebuild your engine prematurely go ahead and use it.
Follow the GM recomendations for oil viscosity to get the longest life from your motor.
Contrary to popular belief, using a oil that is to thick for the design of the oil passages causes starvation to some parts and an early demise.

sell that oil to some kid with an import.. use the $ to get yourself some 5w30 and be happy...
maybe you can go to a store and say something like "my mom got the wrong oil, can I exchange it for the right one?" and get the right weight..

i put some of that Mobil 1 "high performace" oil, i think it was 20w50, in my 96z which had just over 55k miles at the time.
i noticed an increase in engine noise right after startup and an decent increase in oil pressure.
i didn't notice anything other than that, but then again it's 90-100 degrees down here in the keys...
probably in the long run it would have caused problems...stick with 5w or 10w

If you want, you can mix it with a thinner weight oil to get something in between. I personally have used a mix of 4 quarts 10W30 and 2 quarts of 15W50 with success. This mixture also reduced oil consumption.
Mix that stuff with some 5W30 and you should be fine,b ut do not run it straight in your car.

With all the problem our engines have moving 5 weight with the stock, crappy oil pump, I wouldn't push my luck with oil that thick. You will actually lose a couple of HP and you gas mileage may be down a little bit. On cold starts, that weight oil is like a milkshake, but since it is a full synthetic, it might not be as extreme as comparable dino-oil.

Like everyone else has said, 20W50 straight is too thick, but mixing a quart or two of it with 5W30 would work fine.
