1998 LS1 Q's

Searched and could not find the answers.....

1. Oil pan gasket. I am planning some modifications and will be replacing the oil pump. I know that at least the water pump gaskets changed post 98. Part of changing the oil pump requires dropping the pan from what I read. Is the pan gasket reusable, or should I plan on doing some serious labor.......like dropping the K-frame?

2. Cylinder heads. I am thinking getting some LS6 heads and having them ported. Mine are perimeter bolt. 99+ and all LS6 are center bolt. What besides the covers and the thing that holds the coils are needed?

3. Cam choice will come later. I am going to do heads, cam, long tubes, and a cutout (keeping the Flowmaster/chokemaster cat back). I have done SFC, and will do a Wolfe 6 point bolt in cage for safety and because they look cool. I will also do new tires and rims, and a set of rims/street-drag radials. If/when I blow the rear, I will do a 12 bolt rear...

4. Can I hope for 11's?? No spray. If I get all this and do not hit 11's, then we will talk spray.....

I'm not positive but I think you might have to get '98 specific heads. At least if you don't want to swap to center valve covers. I'm sure with those mods + LS6 intake you'll get in the 11's

Well the swap from perimeter to center's is easy. Only things you need are covers and coil brackets. Those as a set can be had for like 80 bucks. Definately do the LS6 heads if its in your budget, but remember that they'll only give about a 10-15 hp advantage over the 241's so if it'll cost $400+ more I say its not worth it.

I dont know about track times with heads only and bolt ons. I think to reach 11's you might need a cam. The duration on the stocker just doesnt cut it.

No, no, I will be doing a cam. It is stock ported heads, or ported LS6 heads. This is on a pseudo budget, but I will accumulate longer to afford more..... i will accumluate everything, and do it all at once. maybe headers and exhaust first, but all motor stuff will be at once....

Plan on droping either your K-member or pulling the engine. I had a oil pan gasket blow and I found it easier to just pull it. Way easier that droping the K'member if you have the right equipment.
Don't waste your money on LS6 Heads if you want 11's you want some patriot or Dart heads fully ported and polished and a set off slicks and you should be in the 11's NO SPRAY NEEDED.
"THere is no replacement for Displacement" LOL
