'00 SS rear end....what size....
'00 SS rear end....what size....
got a '00 ss and i get different answers from different people. I have a 2000 ss M6 and I am thinking of putting a new gear in the back to kinda help with takeoff. But If I have a 3.55 then it would be worth it for me to throw in a 4.10 gear. If I have a 3.23 then I would do a 3.73 gear. Note I do a lot of highway. So any good feedback on this would be great. Thanks
....naughty....thanks for the feedback......but...how much should i worry about the engine revving to high and gas mileage.......but 4.10 sounds naughty.......what would be the newtop speed....
with 4.10's in my M6, rpms at 80mph were like 2200-2300 range, I had no real gas milage differences. top speed is limited to like 120mph in a Z28 that did not get Z rated tire option, on cars with the Z rated tires supposed to be 163mph. in a car limited to 120mph it will top out at about 110mph even though your speedo says 120. when you change gears you throw off the ratios programmed into the PCM, though this can be reset with LS1edit.
all SS's come with Z rated tires, so the 120MPH limiter wont be a factor.
Assuming an otherwise stock vehicle top speed will be 155 (you'll hit the rev limiter in 5th) Other mods can change this obviously.
you can use a hypertech to change the speedo as well.
Personaly I liked the 3.73's with the stock motor. after the cam I went to 4.11's and just switched to 4.30's.
I went with 3.73's because they are a little stronger than, and put a little less strain on the rear end than the 4.10's, and still gave me a littel more oomph at the bottom end.

not all 94+ had 3:42, I had a 94 with 3:23. SS in '96 got 3:42 and '97 as an option. '98 up stock (LS1's get better gas mileage)
If I can break the rear end loose with 3:42 not using the clutch how useful is 4:10's in 1st gear. (STOCKISH) 3:73 would be interesting to get the engine to rev and keep you in the sweet spot in the rpm band. Best with a free flowing exhaust, atleast, I would think.

What were the option codes for the 3.23 in a manual car? I collect information on F-bodys and hadn't seen that before. What was the standard gear in 97 if 3.42 was optional. All my information says that all six speed cars got 3.42s unless it was a 93, which could have either 2.73s or 3.23s. Were the ratios in the transmission different on the 3.23 94's, cause it would appear to be horribly geared if it were the same as the 3.42s.
Also, 4:10s are better for 1/4 mile on motor, by at least a 10th. Granted thats on slicks and with traction. A 2.73 car can spin the tires all day without traction. My car would burn down the 2.73s on the street, but with 3.42s it was 3 10ths faster in the 1/4.

I will check the code, friend owns the car now. Should be the same as the auto. As I understand the story, 3:42 came out with the SS as standard and the Z could get it as a option. My '97 had it. The LT1's really don't get that great of gas milage. LS1 do and could use the 3:42 as standard.
M6 = 3.42 gears
A4 = 2.73 or 3.23 gears
3.73s would be a good choice for a FI or nitrous car and 4.10s would be a blast around town. You may have to check tire height and RPM through the traps so that you forced to make an extra shift.
