Re: Winter Storage Dumb??

I'd remove the batt and hook it up to a trickle charger inside

Re: Winter Storage Dumb??

The first winter that I stored my car I left the battery in and it leaked pretty bad. I would not leave it in the car.

Re: Winter Storage Dumb??

I left mine parked last winter with the battery left in from the end of December 'til end of March (~3 months) and in that time the battery completely died. It took awhile to get charged back to the point where the "green eye" was visible again too. This year I plan to pull it out.

I pulled my battery out last year and it died anyway... the only way to keep it charged over the winter is to hook it up to a trickle charger. Which I still don't have... so it looks like I'll be boosting my Camaro in the spring.

You dont need fuel stabilizer for a few months. Gas will not go bad in 4 or 5 months.
Once you start getting closer to a year or better, it's a good idea.

Hmmm thats good to know I always thought that 2 months on no use would form the stale deposits in gas.

Re: Winter Storage Dumb??

If you were to keep the car in a garage, then you could get away with pulling the NEG. cable,or hook up a float type charger a trickle charger can over charge a battery also. But you said you were keeping it outside so pull the battery and bring it inside. Do not set it on the floor, and if you do put something under it to keep it off the ground. Charge it up and check it once a month in the spring it should start your car.

Re: Winter Storage Dumb??

I'll vote for the float-type charger, like the Battery Tender. My car is "track only" and sits in an unheated garage for months on end. Winter temperatures often go below freezing. Until I started using the Battery Tender, the batteries just seemed to die from non-use, and that included an Optima Red Top that only lasted 6 months. Current battery is 5 years old and still going stong.

Don't start the car once a week . Can you say "really hard on the bearings"? I don't know who started the rumour that this was a good thing to do for a car being stored??

You can get them at just about any auto parts store, the"Battery Tender"is about $25 at autozone. What ever brand make sure it is a FLOAT type which means when the battery is fully charged it shuts down and kicks back on when it sences the battery needs charging.

I'm talking about if you're STORING the car, not driving it everyday! Obviously if you're driving it everyday, it may be starting several times per day!

The problem with starting a car too frequently that's being stored is if you don't let it get up to full operating temperature, then there can be condensation build-up in and around the engine (inside the engine, exhaust, etc. ). This topic was discussed not too long ago. Also, it's never good to only idle a car and not actually DRIVE it, so you're just going to waste gas and carbon up the cylinders because of idling it just waiting for the temp gauge to come up to normal. Unless you're actually going to take the car out for a drive, leave it alone until you're done leaving it in storage ... that was my whole point.
