Winter Help!

Hey everyone.
I'm pretty new here and I couldn't find exactly where to post this, so I decided to post it in the care & maintenance section.

I've got a 1980 z28 camaro, just bought it off my stepdad.
She runs really really good for her age.
Pretty much stock except for the exhaust. Nothing too great.
But the thing I need help with is, I live in Canada and am moving to go to school in the fall.

I don't plan on using my car ALL the time, but I may need to use it here and there in the winter. It's my only form of transportation.

So does anyone have any tips on what I can do to keep my car running safely in the winter, for those few instances where I really need to use her?

Any help would be great.

It is an older car, so make sure a tuneup and all of the maintenance work has been kept up on it. Also, it wouldn't hurt to invest in some snow tires and even throw some sand bag tubes in the trunk to provide some extra weight in the rear and thus better traction. Also, I would keep up on the cleaning end of it as well, if your car is getting caked in road salt, I would try to get that cleaned off as soon as possible.

If you get snow tires, you can go a lot farther than anyone expects you to, at least in my Camaro. I took mine places that people wouldn't take their FWD cars last winter. All you need to do it take caution when driving, drive slower. It's kinda like being around wild animals, just don't make any sudden movements.

The sandbags, such a good idea.
Ya I don't really want to use my car in the winter, but I really have no choice. I've got to get around and hey...at least i'll be in a camaro, right? I'll definitely be doing the winter tires.

Thanks guys so much for the advice.

Oh I forgot to add this.
Here in Yellowknife NT (Canada)
The winters get down to -60C if we're really unlucky.
But that's rare. Almost everyone that owns a vehicle takes a bit of air out of their tires for the winter, to gain more traction.

Any tips on how much air should be let out of your tires?
