Shoebox mentioned someone using a table leg. Although I didn't use a table leg, I did use the leg off an old chair. I measured the distance from the bottom of the window to the door bottom and cut to the proper length.

I used a Dorman, and I noticed it's somewhat different from the GM motor. It fits correctly, but it sounds different, and seems to be a bit faster.

I've used a small block of wood and nothing before. Unless the regulator is loose, the window is not just going to fall all the way down when the motor comes off, there is still some resistance on it. Having something there is just added insurance. I would recommend using some screws and nuts for the motor, and make sure you have lock washers and use loctite (mine backed off once).
