wheel well rust?
hey i have a 95 chevy camaro the car has 125,000 miles on it the car is in excelent shape all over thought then engine compartment is clean the interior has no rips or stains people tell me the car looks more like a 30-40 mile car but my wheel wells not that any one noticed it is rusting i plan on taking it to a shop and having them fixed this summer. the undercoating bubbled up in to these blisters and when i took a screw driver and poked them they poped and rust fell out any one else have this problem?
Re: wheel well rust?
My whole car is pretty clean, which is surprising because I bought the car from somebody who was a Chicago resident. My old third gen though was in the opposite shape as the wheel wells and the floorboards were rotted out pretty badly. The cost to repair that stuff outweighed my motivation to further keep the car.

for the under body parts that are rusted, try this stuff. Used it on my truck works great.

Re: wheel well rust?
I would recommend getting a wire wheel on a drill and cleaning up the rust to get an idea of how bad it is. Is it on the surface, or is it a hole in the metal?
Por15 is great stuff. If the rust is only on the surface I'd recommend cleaning it up, painting it with Por15 and applying fresh undercoat on it.

Re: wheel well rust?
beat you to that i did clean it up i sand blasted some and wire brushed some other parts of it the driver side wheel well is just rust the pasanger side has a whole in around the bottom. i dont want the car to get out of control so i really insist on replaceing them in the next year or two becuase i plan on keeping the car for a long long time
Re: wheel well rust?
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if you have a rust hole in one place, and surface rust in other places it is pretty much over for your car in the long term. It is going to rust to oblivion. All the little seams and welds. It's already started in all those places you cant even see.
Trying to stay on top of it will cost you more over the years than you can stomach. In another 5 years your car will be looking really rough.
Sorry, but it's a ticking time bomb. As cheap as completely rust free 4th gen cars are today, it might not ba a bad idea to trade it in on a rust free car and not have to worry about it any more.

little jumpin the gun arnt you not seeing the car and all? i know the car and there is no rust any where else i have had the car on the lift looking at every thing. i think this is just a problem with the undercoating either not being applied properly or a deffect in the undercoating becuase the car is spotless every were else even has been garage keeped in the winter since i have bought it and the previouse owener older gentelman the same. like i said this is a by product haing something to do with the undercoating and im gona fix it. i have resored other cars and know what to look for. i curiouse on howmany other camaros are having this problem i would have never found it except i was doing some maintnace on the breaks and noticed something thats when i took a screw driver to the undercoating other wise i would have never found it . the best way for me to descibe it is like blisteres but not very visible. but i will have them fix im going to get a quot in a few weeks.

Let us know how it goes.
The thing that bothers me the most about welding in patches is the back side. What if the structure of the car does not allow access to the back side of the repair? How do you go about making sure it gets painted/protected so it does not just rust through again right away? There are lots of little nooks and crannys in our cars making it hard or impossible to get to the back sides of panels.

Re: wheel well rust?
you know i did weld in pannels in my truck cab conner on an extanded cab and i had just that problem. we used weldable primer that was 4 to 5 years ago and the new cab conners are still good. the reason im not welding the wheel wels my self are first in the process of moving but most of all the car is a unibody and i dont want to cut the wheel wells out and get distortion in the body and im not sure if they would it apears to me by looking at it thought that it is just a sheet metal covering becuase there is more sheet metal right behing it. i have replaced floor pans and a trunk pan in a 70 chevelle but then the car was guted and i could well in structuall support. i figure ill just leave this to the professionalls thanks guys ill let you know how i make out
