what usualy causes the fuel gauge to not work

my fuel gauge stays pegged out to way over full even if the tank is bone dry. what causes most of the time on our cars? i will be pulling the fuel tank tomorrow and i would like to try and fix it if i can.

Just look at what takes the reading in the tank and where it is in relationship with the fuel level
