What is My Problem? tick tick tick

Well...whenever i turn on my A/C i get a noisy "tick tick tick" sound and it looks like my drive belt actually warps or doesnt stay on the pulley correctly when it makes these ticking noises. It does not do this when the A/C is off. Im 99% sure this is dealing with the A/C compressor. What I do not understand is, my A/C blows pretty cold air and usually always works pretty well as long as I add freon whenever I need it. Can a compressor really be bad if it is blowing cold air? Im guessing that the compressor is just shot and is hard for the pulley to turn over...so what is the deal.

sounds to me like the clutches, or whatever they're called inside the compressor, are bad. so they only make noise or give problems when engaged to turn the AC on.

and if you have to add freon that means you have a leak of some kind. i've never added freon to a car in my life

yea i knew i had a leak on one of the hoses...the schrader valve, the valve where you add the freon, it leaks in there because before I got the car, someone broke off the shcrader valve in there. But as long as i kept freon in it every 2 months or so, the A/C worked fine.

So since my clutch in my compressor has gone bad, i guess that means new compressor huh? I have a used A/C compressor from my past LT1 car ( same year same everything ) and i took it out of that car cuz im 99% sure that it was fine at the time of removal...but that has been sitting in a box on my garage floor for over 2 years. I wonder if it is worth all the work to find out if it works or not??? I know those A/C compressors run about $250 or so...so it might be worth it.
