so i was driving my 94 z28 a4 today and i got on it doing about 15 mph and at about 4,000rpm the car just shut off and then a second later came right back on by itself. i also did notice a little choke at about 60mph at 1,700rpm. im pretty sure its not the opti and fuel pump seems like its working fine. any ideas? thank you

 

When you say "shut off" what exactly do you mean? Did it feel like the fuel shut off and the car had no power or all the power went out and it was like all the electrical went dead? I had a problem with a dying ignition switch and it got worse with time and also had a bad alternator and the voltage would drop under wot and cause a hiccup. I use to keep the battery terminals loose so when the car was sitting for long period of times I could disconnect the battery easily. Sometimes it would loose connection and cause a similar issue.

 

well the problem actually got worse several hours after this post...basically the car runs perfect when its sitting in park. i can rev it and nothing is wrong. last night i drove it to my buddies house and it just died at a redlight. almost seems like an electrical problem. so i put car in park it started right back up, then i put in drive and it died again...started it again and it ran fine for a few miles and then compltely shut off again. and i repeated process til i made it home.

 

and by shut off and die, its immediate, no hesitation or anything, just turns off no warning

 

Do you have a way to check the fuel pressure? Lots of things it could be. Any check engine light?

 

fuel pressure is fine....now the only thing i noticed today wen i was working on it was the wire the runs out the back of the alternator was hitting the pulley on the alternator and the metal inside the rubber coating of the wire was contacting the side of the alternator...could this be causing it to short and shut the car off?

 

Most likely your problem. Just fix it and see if that takes car of it.
