Upgrade Speedometer

My 94 Z28 vert. 6 speed has the 110 MPH speedo and I would like to upgrade to the 150/160 MPH. Is this an easy improvement?

Thanks

Re: Upgrade Speedometer

I have heard that the earlier Z28 convertibles did not come with z-rated tires so did not get the speedo. My 95 conv has the 155 speedo.

Re: Upgrade Speedometer

Z-rated tires were an OPTION on both coupes and convertibles. The "base" Z28 came with 235/55-16 tires that were not Z-rated, hence the 110 MPH speedo. Option "QLC" got you 245/50-16 Z-rated tires, and the 155 MPH speedo.

Re: Upgrade Speedometer

When I bought the car, the dealer told me the 110 mph speedo cars have a speed limiter programmed into the pcm? I have not come across this on the forums so think it was incorrect info from the dealer (go figure).

Re: Upgrade Speedometer

Yes, the cars WITHOUT the Z-rated tires have a top speed limiter programmed into the PCM. Depending on the year of the car, ranges from 108 - 116MPH. It can be reprogammed. The cars with the Z-rated tires are popularly believe to "have no top speed limiter", but the stock programming has "255" entered into the top speed limit field, the larges possible 8-bit binary number.

255! I would hit EJECT well before 255.
