Turn the key to start, and nothing happened

I drove to the liquor store today, I came out and went to start my car and nothing. Turn the key to the on position and everything seems normal, but when I turn the key to the start position all I can hear is a very faint click. I tried it a few times without any luck, then waited about 15-20 minutes. This time I turned the key and the car fired right up, no problem. My battery is pretty new, and I'm getting a good voltage reading on the dash, so I am ruling that out. Could this be an ignition switch, starter, or starter solenoid? I really don't think it could be the ignition switch beacuse the security light goes out as it should. I just don't have the money to take chances and buy parts hoping it will be fixed, so hey let me know what you guys think, or if you had this happen before.

Go over all grounds/etc. first as I'm sure you have...

You said there was a faint clicking -- from where? Near the BCM/what side of the dash? under the hood?

I was all by myself parked on a busy street, I'm not sure but it sounded like it was coming from the starter area. Yeah I checked all of the wiring and everything seems to be good. I'm going to go outside right now and try my other key, just to test it out.

I'd check battery/connections first. Just over 24K on my car - on third battery. One time wouldn't even unlock the doors, another clicked once and died, another rapid clicking - each time it was the battery.

Re: Turn the key to start, and nothing happened

I just happened to clean my battery connections about three weeks ago just for the hell of it, but, I tried my other key in the ignition and the damn thing started right up Sometimes I feel like there is a ghost under my hood . I'm a bit relieved right now, all I can do is hope that it was the key.

sounds like you need to clean the pellet in your key. just wipe it with some alchol or acetone. . what happened is the vatts module didnt recongise the pellet in your ket and dissabled the car.

I'm an airplane mechanic and sometimes I forget to wash my hands before putting my keys in my pocket after work. I know that i probably got some **** on my key but can I clean it with solvent or would I **** it up?

If it did'nt recognize the key, wouldnt the security light come on? I'm beginning to think that the switch under the clutch pedal may be going out.

This happens ever so often on mine and when it's just a "click" or nothing at all....even though eveything works and the voltage isnt in the red....

It's always the darn positive or neg. battery terminals! Annoying but I finally got it to go away. Just keep cleaning & tightening everything

There is a spray that you can buy after cleaning the terminals that will coat them and prevent the corrosion too. Its about 3 bucks a can. But in the posters case his pellet on his key was dirty once he tried a new key it fixed the problem .
