Tire choices with 16" rims
I was about to purchase some new rims and was going to get 16" rims till I've discovered that there are not many tire choices for 16" rims as far as width goes. The widest the most manufactures seem to carry is 255's.
Was wanting a wider tire than that.
What is everyone else running with 16" rims, or should I go up to 17" rims??

Re: Tire choices with 16" rims
I bet it is quite hard, if not impossible, to find a tire wider than 255/50-16 which will fit the stock 16x8 wheels.
If you want to go wider, you need to go with at least 17's.

Re: Tire choices with 16" rims
Yeah I guess 17's won't look that big, I was concerned about it looking like too much rim and no tire, but I guess my '99 doesn't look bad with 17's. Will have to get a set of 15's for drag racing then.
Was thinking of getting either American Racing Torque Thrust-D and have the center section painted or powder coated to match the car, or AR CL200S, also maybe painting the center section to match.

Re: Tire choices with 16" rims
I'd upgrade to 17" if you want some fatter tires. I have the stock 5 spoke chrome 16" wheel.
As far as tires, Kuhmo Ecstca's I have on there now suck. I cannot get these tires to hook for anything. I have spun the tires all the way to 30 MPH at 3/4 throttle. Traction in first gear, forget about it. Traction in 2nd, maybe when you get going faster than 55. They do handle pretty well, and you have to be going suicidal speeds before they will howl. Wet traction is good, but they still have almost all their tread too. And these suckers are noisy, but its a performence tire.
The Sumitimo HTR+ I had before were decent tires. I only got 20,000 miles out of them, lots of burnouts I could usually get these tires to hook, they rode pretty smooth, were fairly quiet, and handled okay(the Kuhmo's have more grip and less roll). The best part is that they performed in all aspects exactly the same when new and worn.

Re: Tire choices with 16" rims
17's look amazing on camaros and firebirds alike. especially the torque thrusts. i myself like the idea of having the same width in the front as in the rear so if i dont have cash to replace the tires i can swap them during rotation. 18's look good, but for street use i'd stay away from them. they tend to break uncontrollably (by that i mean break lose before they let you know they are going to). 16's and 17's have som sidewall flex that lets the driver know the limits of the tire's traction before they cut loose, 18's dont have enough sidewall to do that, so they wont tell you.
the most common tire sizes for the camaro/firebird are 245/50/16, 275/40/17, 315/35/17, 275/35/18. the first number is the width of tread in mm. the second is the percentage of the width in mm to make the height of the sidewall. the third number is the rim width.
