Throwing P1406 code

I had my SES light go on while driving and stopped into Autozone to get it scanned. The code was a P1406 which said "Auxilary emissions controls" I figured it was the EGR. The car runs great...actually maybe better. I got it erased. I did a search on here but doesn't tell me much. I learned the code is an EGR Valve Pintle Position Circuit. I am lost as to what that means? The EGR is somewhere on one of the exhaust manifolds I was told. What should I do?

Yea I figured ppl would know its a 6 from the SN. I got one and it didn't say anything but how to replace the EGR. Is that what I should do to fix it? I got the code erased and it hasn't come back...I dunno if it would come back tho. It hasn't affected anything as I can tell. If the valve sticks shut NOX emissions will soar and detonation could occur. If it sticks in the open,it acts like a vacuum leak resulting in a rough idle, hesitation and possible stalling. And so I haven't had any of those problems...when I do, i'll know what it is that needs fixin' I guess.

Re: Throwing P1406 code

You sure thats the correct code?? P0401-P0405 are the EGR error codes. The Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve is located, I believe, pretty close to the firewall on the exhaust manifold. The Linear EGR is comprised of four apprx 1-2in tall black plastic pieces that are in a tight cluster. Hope that helps a bit...

Re: Throwing P1406 code

The Chilton's manual code table for the 97 3.8L V6 does not show a code P1406. Only thing close would be a P1404 for an EGR pintle problem.

The code lookup CD for my Actron scanner shows a P1406, with "EGR Pintle Position Circuit". That would appear to be an elctrical problem with the positioner circuit, eithr a faulty part of the EGR, or a wiring problem. The V6 EGR valves are very complex and VERY expensive.

Well if its expensive and my car is running perfectly...I guess I really don't care to fix it
