Stuck ignition switch

Stuck ignition switch
What would be a main cause if the ignition switch will only go into accessory and lock (won't go forward at all)? Yes it's the right key... Tried turning the wheel and moving the shifter while trying to turn the key and no luck.

Re: Stuck ignition switch
actually now it looks like a binded actuator rod problem... Could it have slipped out or something got in it's way and does anyone have any schematics or pictures of what it looks like? Where does the line from the shifter lock connect to the linkage?

Re: Stuck ignition switch
You're talking about the rod that goes from the key to the ignition switch? I don't know if it could pop out of the ignition switch since the rod is bent on the end and slips into a slot on the switch... I think if it did pop out, the key would be loose instead of binding... But I guess anything is possible... Have you tried a spare key? Maybe the teeth are worn on the original... Assuming it's an automatic, has someone pressed the shifter **** and screwed up the neutral safety switch? I had that happen on an 84 I had and the key wouldn't turn at all... Could be a bad key cylinder, or possibly the ignition switch... This is for your 3rd gen listed in your sig, right?

Re: Stuck ignition switch
thanks for the reply. I was talking about the rod that goes from the steering column down the shaft to the starter switch. It ended up being the wire that locks the wheel when you have the key in the lock position. It's missing a spring or something and got int the way of the rod. This is my car at home and I'm 2000 miles away right now so I don't know exactly what it looked like. Yea the lock cylinder was pulled out and it worked fine. Well all better now

Re: Stuck ignition switch
It's possible for the ignition switch (down on the lower part of the column) to jam up if it is worn out. The sliding portion inside can get hosed up. You will probably have to take things off to prove where the hangup is.
There is also a sector mechanism that transitions the key cylinder movement to the rod. That can be hung up as well.

Re: Stuck ignition switch
thanks. Like I said I'm 2000 miles away from the car (it's with my parents) so I'm just relaying the info as it comes. Anywho, the problem was seen and fixed so shes back on the road again
