Starting Problems & Loud Noise From Rear

Yesterday I went to fire up my TA and it cranked over for about 10 - 15 seconds before starting. This was really odd because it has NEVER had any such problem, but I just wrote it off as a one time thing.

Then today I was idling around a lot checking out some nice houses with my girlfiend and I kept hearing a loud noise from the back of my car. It was a very loud "humming" sound, almost like someone trying to play some air instrument or flute but being really bad at it. It would have a constant pitch for about 4 seconds and then get a little higher pitch for about 2 seconds, the same every time. I could hear it really well from everywhere, but it was especially loud from under the car back near the rear axle. It would make noise from about 5 or 6 seconds and then go away and come back a few minutes later and kept doing this. No noticable drivability problems though. It did this as long as the car was on, even if not moving. The temp. never got above about 190* either. Once I got back on the main roads and driving around a lot and onto the highway, it stopped completely.

Then after I had parked it and went to start it 4 or 5 hours later, it did the same cranking for about 10 - 15 seconds without starting before finally firing up. And again once it did start, I didn't notice it behaving wierd at all.

What is going on??? I thought maybe a fuel pump because I cannot think about what else is really back there? Any ideas? I'm pretty concerned.

Sounds very similar to my problem. I have not figured out exactly what the humming noise is. I do suspect the fuel pump as well. I have been driving it for the past few months like this, without any issues so far (knock on wood). Good luck, and let me know if you find anything out. Sorry im not much help.

1quickTA I got your message.. In our cars a good fuel pump has a constant humming sound.. It sounds like hissing coming from your rear speakers.. If yours is coming and going (the sound) you might not want to travel to far from home.. It might be going bad.. Also change your fuel filter..

I know everthing is running ok right now, but it could go dead at anytime.. So dont worry about that sound, thats a good thing.. Its when you dont hear it anymore.. thats when you have to worry..

My car has had a history and continues with much the same issue. Im not quite sure of the sound of your car, but after driving a bit it makes a higher pitch sound, sometimes constant especially at idle or slow cruise. The first thought I had was an exhaust leak. However, I had a recent episode in which my car after driving a while just stalled and would not start until 5 minutes went by. After it cooled down, it started without any problem. By the time I got home, it did it again; and once again it cooled down and restarted. I took the car to a local mechanic I used before, but could not replicate the problem, but they did notice the noise after running awhile. They said it sounded like a fuel pump going out. The problem is that I replaced that 2 years ago? But now everyone here puts 10% ethanol in the gas and I wonder if it has had an effect with the fuel pump?? They recommended the change since they are positive this was an electrical sound. They may be right, but the car has run fine since then....
