Starter Problem
Starter Problem
if this isn't the right spot for this question, please move it....
94Z28,m6. long story that i won't get into now, but...does anyone know if a starter has two circuits to make it work ? In other words, does one circuit engage, and a second spin the starter motor ? I only see one small wire and one large cable directly from the battery. The starter engages, but does not spin.

Power to the selinoid is provided by the large wire. Ground is provided through the contact with the motor. When the key is turned voltage is sent out and goes through that small wire. once it hits the selinod it closes the selinoid alowing the main power to go through and acualy crank the car.
if you here the selinod clicking whe you trun the key you could have either a bad connection, a low battery or a bad starter. if you test for battery voltage at the main wire and also at the smal wire when in the crank position you can rule out battery and bad connection.
also, have someone crank it while you hit the stater with a hammer etc. sometimes it can stick. if this works. replace teh starter anyway cause it will do it again

ok, thanks for the reply. I understand what you're saying, but my question is, does the starter engage AND spin the starter motor at the same time ? Is there only 1 connection telling the starter to do both ?
like i said long story...... I have the flexplate off the engine and can see the starter move its drive gear when i turn the key, but thats all it does. It doesn't spin. everything was fine when i removed the m6 (doing m6 to A4 swap) but now the starter won't spin the motor. I found the connector that originally went to the clutch pedal, shorted it and now at least the starter engages, but won't spin the engine.

good question, thats why i was asking if anyone knew if there was 2 circuits. I have a connector (which i assume went to the clutch pedal) with 2, 10 or 12 Gauge wires, 1 brown, 1 yellow, shorted together to get the starter to engage, but it doesn't spin.
if the starter is getting main power and a good ground and battery voltage on the selinoid wire when the key is turned thats the last step and should work. if not the starter is bad. everything from ign switch, clutch or NS switch. theft module, starter relay etc are all befor ethat point so if there was a problem you would not be gettin power at the starter
