Speedometer Failure...

Just happened this morning...On my 97 V6... The Tach works fine, however when I'm moving the Speedo is at 0... Sometimes it will swing around but always lands back on 0... Whats the problem and how much am I looking at for a repair... Can it be done myself?

Re: Speedometer Failure...

well to start... it could be the cluster... or it could be the sensor in the transmission tailshaft... or it could be the BCM or ECM (I cant remember which one handles speedo)... or it could be a bad wire...

Without a scanner, I'm not sure how you'd diagnose it. Hopefully, someone else here will have some diagnostic suggestions, though.

Re: Speedometer Failure...

A scanner can check for any codes and read out the MPH if it sees pulses from the VSS. That will tell you whether the trouble is between the VSS and PCM or PCM and cluster.

For function of the sensor, not that I know of. If you just want to check continuity of the wiring, you can to that with a meter.

If the VSS is faulty, the SES light should be on.

Where's the wire at for it anyway?

Re: Speedometer Failure...

The VSS is on the drivers side of the tranny, on the tailshaft housing. It goes to PCM pins A31 (purple wire) and A32 (yellow wire).

Shoebox has the pinout data on his website:

Re: Speedometer Failure...

Okay, New issue... If the VSS or Speedo Sensor was faulty on an A4... They say I shouldn't beable to get out of 1st...

Here's exactly what it's doing. Hit a bump and it will fling into action then die again. When I'm doing about 70 (2.2k RPMS for my car) it says I'm doing 10 - 25 and just bounces around that area erratically until I hit a bump and it may or may not jump to about 50... but then falls again...

Could this also be a faulty gauge cluster? Because I'm shifting quite fine...

If it were the cluster... Would the Odometer and Tripometer malfunction aswell? Mine are but I thought it would with the speedometer inactive anyway...

Also when I bang on the dashboard the needle bounces around... That normal?

Where's the VSS on the tranny? I'm looking at the tailshaft where the driveshaft meets and can't find it...
