I bought a 96 z28 last fall and the owner stated he put in a short shifter. Now, I don't know if he bought an actual short shifter, or just a short stick.

The problem is, when I shift into 2nd gear, the shift lever hits the console and its a really odd angle and not comfortable. There is even a tear in the leather boot from the constant contact.

I took the center console out to see if there was a way I could adjust either the shifter or the console itself to no avail. I could not tell if it is a stock shifter or something like a pro 5.0 or hurst etc.

Any thoughts or suggestions on how I can remedy this?

 

The stick bolts to the shift lever with two allen bolts. The stick should be on the passenger side relative to the lever. Maybe it's backwards?

 

If you can post a picture of the shifter, we can tell you whether it's stock, aftermarket, or has a "short stick".

 

JakeRobb, I swear, if it is that easy of a fix, I will smack myself in the forehead! It is on the "driver" side currently.
Injuneer, I will get a shot of it as soon as I can, when I switch the stick around as JakeRobb mentioned. I'm really curious as it seems like the throw is short. Unfortunatley, I have not driven a stock Camaro M6 so I cant compare.

 

dang, i switched it over to the passenger side, and put the console back together and boom, now getting it into reverse is no good.
Maybe ill just take the stick to work one day and grind it down some so it doesnt hit the console. fun fun fun.....
