You set a code and this tells you that something is wrong. Pretty much the same thing. You can get it read, so you know what might be wrong. These are pretty basic computers, so things like oil changes are not show or basic maintenance.

Re: service engine soon and check engine same?

On the LT1 F-Body Check engine is controled by circuits in the dash cluster it indicates low voltage or low oil pressure or high temp coolant, a signal to look at your dash gauges.. Seperate from the Service Engine Soon (SES) light that is illuminated by the PCM for engine/powertrain sensor or emission failures. I would assume the 2001 LS cars would be similiar, but I could be incorrect w/o the books handy.

I had a 94 and it would tell me check gages when it had a problem but this one doesn't so I'm thinking it's just something small like spark plugs or oil change wish I had the owners manual

Service engine soon and check.engine are the same

Not to be confused with service vehicle soon, which is what would light for an oil change unless there is a specific change oil soon light

The "Check Gages" light comes on when there is a problem indicated by one of the dash gages, at least according to the 2001 Camaro Owner's Manual.

The functions of the following are clearly explained in the Owner's Manual:

-Check Gages
-Service Engine Soon (US) = Check Engine (Canada)
-Oil Change
-Service Vehicle
-Reduced Engine Power

If you don't have an Owner's Manual for your car, Shoebox has a link to the online copies:
