Security system

So I went out to my car today and I turned the key and it wouldn't crank. It just had the security light on. I haven't done anything recently to my car that would warrant this. Is it possible that the little resistor thing on the key has worn out? It cranked about 5 min later.

Apparantly I was right. The resistor on the side of the key was pretty worn out. Especially when compared to a new key. The guy at the dealership said that this is a fairly common problem in older cars.

me too

Funny... I had the same exact problem this morning.

I got the list of pellet codes from Rob's site, and am off to buy a resistor(s)..

Looking forward to getting under the dash again..

Anyway, that's the deal... Had to use my wife's copy of the key to get it started.

Will paypal Rob some $green$, as his site is awesome..

later

yeah... I just went to Radio Shack and checked the resistance of my key pellet (1870). I then snagged 3 resistors (1.5K, 270 and 100 ohms) and have soldered them together...

Tomorrow (when its light) I'll pull the lower dash and find the VATS connection and hook into those wires there...

touch wood it'll be easy enuf???

I'll post a follow up.

Or you could just buy a new key for $34 and be done with it. A new car is a lot more expensive than a new key...

turned out to be

the connection btn the 2 white wires and the purple one (and ???) going to/from the VATS module was loose...

Before I started mugging the white wires w/ the resistor route I just made the connection "good", and was in business...
